Water Damage In An Office Building

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

Due to the recent cold spell that Fairfield County has experienced, temperatures have been dipping back below freezing, especially at night.  These low temperatures, much like the entire winter season, can bring issues like frozen pipes with them.

One office building in the area was having issues with their heating system.  After getting the issue checked out, they found that one piece of the system had failed, and needed replacement.  Due to the temperatures trending warmer, the issue was not deemed to be of high importance.  Then the weather got cold again…

Once temperatures had dropped, the internal temperature of the building dropped significantly.  This led to not one, but two pipes freezing and bursting.  Water flowed out on the second floor, which seeped down to the first floor.   When employees arrived the next morning, they noticed that the carpet was waterlogged.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton was called in immediately after the damage was noticed.  We arrived quickly and extracted the excess water.  Then we dried the area thoroughly.  It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. Don’t Wait To Call After Water Damage

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

No one wants to experience property damage at their home or business.  It can be costly and also overwhelming to deal with for some people.  But putting off the problem will only make it worse.  Small problems in your home can rapidly turn into major issues if they are not remediated in a timely fashion. Both structural damage and mold damage can occur if your home is not promptly dried and standing water is left stagnant. To guard yourself from spending extra time, money, and effort, you should begin the remediation process immediately.

There are two calls that you should make as soon as you are aware of damage.

Professional Remediation Company

As detailed above, you need to start the remediation process ASAP. This will save you in more ways than one.  Call a company like SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton, who can arrive on scene quickly to begin.

Your Insurance Company

They will be able to advise you of your policy, deductibles, and coverage.  They will give you a claim number, which will make it easier to facilitate repairs in your home or business.  If needed, they may connect you with an adjuster.

Mind The Drips

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Sometimes the smallest amount of excess moisture can lead to big problems.  Water damage can accumulate over time, especially when it is occurring unbeknownst to homeowners. That is why we encourage people to routinely check for drips underneath all sinks in the house.  One drip every once in a while will dry up on its own.  But when a drip is slightly more steady, it can cause a variety of issues, all while no one's the wiser.

Mold - Mold grows when excess moisture in a given area does not dry and mold spores are able to multiply.  And because under-sink areas are usually dark, you may not catch the mold until it is so serious that you need the help of a professional.

Odor - Stale or musty odors can result from under-the-sink drips as well.

Water cost - While technically not water damage, this can still be a costly effect of having pipes that are not absolutely watertight. Similar to a toilet that constantly runs, a dripping pipe or faucet can run up your water bill without you knowing it.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Sewer Backflow Protection

3/11/2022 (Permalink)

Every year, we see hundreds of basements that have suffered water damage. With the spring season coming up quickly, we can expect the amount of rainfall to increase. This will definitely add to the amount of water damages that we encounter.

Whenever there is heavy rainfall, groundwater levels can swell up.  This may cause sewer lines to become engorged, making them flow in the wrong direction, as there is nowhere for the sewage to go.  This water may flow back into your home from any pipe that is connected to the sewer system.  This includes sinks, showers, and toilets.  When this happens, it is one of the most foul damages that a homeowner can suffer. There is an easy solution to ensure that this doesn't happen to you and your home.

Install a backflow valve

A backflow valve is a device that you can install on your sewer line and is designed to allow water or sewage to flow in one direction, but not the other.  This makes it so that it will flow away from your house, but cannot flow towards the house.  This simple piece of equipment can save you time, money, and a headache down the road.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had storm damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Fire In A Hair Salon

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

Recently, a hair salon in Norwalk suffered an overnight fire due to the wire in one of the blow dryers shorting, sparking, and igniting nearby materials.  We were able to be on scene before the fire department left, so remediation began immediately.  Thankfully the damage was not structural, so we had more of a cleanup and minor rebuilding ahead of us.

First, we removed all of the damaged materials and items.  We disposed of them properly, and moved to the next step of the process. We began to clean all of the surfaces that had smoke and soot damage, making them discolored.  Using safe, but powerful chemicals, we removed all of the unsightly and unwanted residue from counters, floors, walls, and all of the pieces of hairdressing equipment.

Next, we addressed the strong smoke odors that permeated surfaces in the space.  Using a combination of air purifiers and surface cleaners, we removed the bad smells entirely.

Business interruption is always the first thing on any business owner’s mind.  The owner was very pleased that the entire process only took a few days.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any fire, smoke, or soot damage. Do Musty Smells Mean Water Damage?

2/23/2022 (Permalink)

Whenever undetected water damage happens, there is always the chance for secondary damage like mold, mildew, and foul odors to arise. Sometimes, the water will fix itself by evaporating on its own, without leaving anything behind.  But this is only possible if air flow is naturally present.  If excess water does not evaporate, and is not removed, it can be the perfect condition for mold growth and smells.

A telltale sign that you have unresolved water damage is when a foul smell is detected. You should do your best to find the possible sources of moisture buildup and remove excess water immediately before it can cause serious damage to your home.  Discoloration, warped flooring, and standing water are visual indicators that may develop before smells, so keep an eye out for these.  Common areas for moisture to accumulate are basements, attics, crawlspaces, gutters, and near pipes, although it can happen anywhere in your home.

Detecting water damage early is important.  It can mean the difference between a small DIY cleanup and an expensive cleanup where professionals are required.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Is Your Home Covered From Groundwater?

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

The short answer is… probably not.

Only about 10 percent of homeowner policies have this type of coverage included.

When water levels rise, usually as a result of excess rainwater, any structure below the water line can be susceptible to leaking and flooding. Water can make its way inside from cracks or sump pump failures.  Other conditions that can lead to groundwater swells are hurricanes and melting snow.

Ground seepage, pipe backups, flooding, and poorly maintained pipes are all situations that likely will not be covered by your homeowners insurance policy.

Steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Install battery backup for your sump pump
  • Ensure that your sump pump can handle the amount of water that you will likely get
  • Consider purchasing a separate flood insurance policy

2/18/2022 (Permalink)

These could be any of the following:

  • Broken windows
  • Structural damage from fallen trees
  • Large roof damage
  • Siding damage
  • Auxiliary structure damage

Carpets After Water Damage

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most common types of property damage in Fairfield County is water in the basement.  Whether it originated from a burst pipe, toilet overflow, or groundwater, water always flows down, and almost always ends up in the basement. When the water ends up in a finished or carpeted basement, homeowners always want to salvage their investment.  Below, we’ll take a look at the factors that determine what course of action needs to be taken.

Category of water - Water is not always the same, depending on its origin, or what it comes into contact with.  If your carpet is wet with clean water, you have a much better chance of saving it, as opposed to the carpet being affected by a sewer backup.

Subfloor - The remediation process will look vastly different, depending on what your carpet is sitting on top of.  Concrete, wood, and padding are all types of subfloor that will determine your carpet’s salvageability.

Time - The longer the carpet is saturated, the harder it will be to restore.  Odors and mold will begin shortly after the damage occurs, so time is of the essence.

As with any water damage to carpeted floors, do not try to remediate the damage yourself.  Without advanced tools and techniques, you will not know if there is lingering moisture that cannot be felt or seen by the naked eye. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has the ability and capacity to not only fix the initial damage, but also to repair and reconstruct the space to preloss conditions.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Hidden Winter Storm Damage

2/16/2022 (Permalink)

The winter season always has the possibility of dropping large amounts of snow, sleet, and ice on property owners.  This can definitely bring immediate damage in the form of ice dams, frozen and burst pipes, and structural damage.  But there can be hidden damage that may go unnoticed until it is too late.

When the spring weather arrives, most people see the sun out and the snow melted.  They take it as a sign that winter-weather storm damage is behind them.  But if not inspected properly, there could be lingering damage that is growing worse while undetected.

For example, if a small leak in your roof is made worse by the weight of the snow, the melting snow can drip gallons of water into your attic or top floor without you knowing.  When the weather warms up, the moisture allows mold to grow, and you have significant mld damage before you know it.  Or maybe the weight of ice in your gutters has caused them to pull away from your roof ever so slightly.  Water is now not properly being routed away from your home or business, allowing it to seep into your basement.

There are other ways that winter storm damage can be undetected, but the bottom line is that you need to inspect your property after a winter weather storm to ensure that you have not sustained any significant damage that would require a professional to remedy.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has the ability and capacity to not only fix the initial damage, but also to repair and reconstruct the space to preloss conditions. It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Hidden Damage In An Office Kitchen Fire

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Everyone makes mistakes.  And for one Norwalk employee, their mistake started a fire in their office building’s kitchen.  They accidentally put something with metal in the microwave, which sparked and caused a small fire in the kitchen.  Once the fire department came and assured everyone that it was safe, employees went back to work.

But days after the fire, it still had the odor of smoke throughout the floor that the small fire had been on.  That’s because even though the fire had been minor, and no structural damage had occurred, there was invisible damage that was not taken care of.  Of course, flames and heat are cause for considerable concern when dealing with a fire in an office setting.  But all types of fire and smoke damage must be accounted for.

Odors that result from smoke and fire sink into porous materials in the environment, such as drywall and cloth furniture.  This residue almost always needs to be professionally cleaned, both because of the techniques and tools used in the process.  SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton was called in by the building maintenance staff, and we were able to rid the building of the foul odor within a matter of hours.

It is important to contact a certified fire and smoke damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of commercial property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Should Your Business Replace Or Restore?

2/10/2022 (Permalink)

When your Norwalk or Wilton business suffers any type of property damage, you may be confronted with a decision.  Depending on the type and extent of the damage, some items in your space may be heavily affected.  A common belief is that it is less expensive to replace an item than it is to restore it.  This may be true, but it is not always the case.

It can be more cost-effective to restore some items in your office space.  For example, an expensive rug can be dried properly at our facility, or furniture that hasn't been heavily affected can sometimes be salvaged.  As with many property damages, acting quickly will greatly increase your chances of being able to restore expensive or sentimental pieces.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has the tools and knowledge to restore many different items in the proper manner.  This may be less expensive, and allow you to salvage some items that would be hard to replace.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of commercial property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Is Your Office’s Carpet Actually Dry?

2/10/2022 (Permalink)

After your business has had any amount of water damage to a carpeted area, you will undoubtedly need to dry the area.  If you are able to determine that the carpet can be dried without replacing it, you may be tempted to dry the area yourself.  But you may run into issues down the road if you choose to go this route.

What many people fail to understand is that the subfloor and pad may still be retaining water or moisture, even if the carpet itself feels dry to the touch.  Without expert knowledge and tools, you may not be able to determine the extent that those materials are affected.  If those materials are not dried properly, you could develop mold and foul odors in the future.  As it is under the carpet, the mold can spread basically undetected until it is a major problem.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of commercial property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Melting Snow Can Spell Disaster

1/31/2022 (Permalink)

We finally got some snow!  Some people may be happy about it, while others may dread just shoveling their driveway.  But one thing that is true for everyone is the fact that when this snow melts, it could be worrisome to some homeowners. As we all know, snow is just water that has frozen on its way down to the ground.  And when the temperature rises enough, it will turn back into water.  So if your home is susceptible to water damage from groundwater or rain, you need to be mindful of melting snow causing some damage to your home.

As temperatures rise, keep an eye out for any of the telltale signs of water damage beginning.  These could be things like water pooling around your foundation or dripping into your attic.  If your gutters have ice in them, they will thaw slower, leading melting snow to stay on your roof or not be properly carried away from your home.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Tips For Buying A Safe Space Heater

1/26/2022 (Permalink)

Whether at home or at work, many people start to use space heaters to supplement their main heating system when the weather gets cold.  This is especially true when a central air system is not present.  Space heaters offer a relatively efficient way to warm the surrounding area quickly, which is why so many people use them. But not all space heaters are created equally.  There are a few ways that some space heaters set themselves apart.  Read further to know what to look for when shopping for one.

Certification: Space heaters on the market are reviewed by safety organizations that will either pass or fail them.  These certifications should be visible on the outside of the box. Be sure to purchase one with a safety certification.

Shutoff features: You should place your heater on a level surface, but sometimes it may get knocked over.  Some space heaters are equipped with a feature that will automatically turn it off if it is on its side too long.

A good cord: This type of cord will guard against fraying and breakage.  Always plug your space heater directly into the outlet, and never run the cord under a carpet or rug.

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the flames are extinguished to help limit and remediate the damage. Practice Fireplace Safety in 2022

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Colder temperatures are finally upon Fairfield County.  Many homeowners will be starting fires in their fireplaces, some even for the first time of the season.  Fireplaces are a time-tested and steady way to provide heat for your home.  When properly maintained, fireplaces are a relatively safe source of home heat.  But they can quickly become a hazard if not monitored well.

Use these tips to keep you and your family safe if you are using your fireplace:

  • Have your chimney cleaned prior to use, especially if you haven't used your fireplace in a while.
  • Use a screen in front of the fireplace if possible
  • If you do not have a screen, monitor the fireplace regularly for embers or debris that could be expelled from the fire
  • Have water nearby to extinguish even a small fire if need be
  • Keep children and pets a safe distance from the fireplace

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the flames are extinguished to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

How To Prevent Secondary Water Damage

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

When you suffer water damage at either your home or business, there are so many thoughts that go through your head.  Often, those thoughts are centered around the visible effects that the water is having on your property.  Rightfully so, these are valid concerns.  Saving furniture, flooring, and personal items is very important, both financially and sentimentally.

But there are also invisible effects that can wreak havoc on your property, causing problems immediately, as well as weeks or months down the road.  Common secondary damage can take the forms of mold or weakening of structures inside the framework of the structure.  If the remediation response is not quick enough, moisture can cause mold spores to grow.  Drywall and wood, if exposed to enough moisture can also become compromised after some time.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Everyone likes to have a clean lawn.  Many people will turn to brush piles to eliminate fallen sticks and branches that they have cleared from their lawn.  When doing this, make sure to maintain a safe distance whenever possible.  Make sure that your fire is a safe distance from trees and other flammable structures.  Have plenty of buckets of water to use in case the flames begin to spread.

Fire Pits

As temperatures cool down, many people will begin to have fires in their backyard more frequently.  They are a nice way to relax with friends or family during the season.  Embers can easily float up and land on trees, your house, or neighboring houses.  Avoid having an outdoor fire if there is any significant wind in the area.

Cooking

More people begin to cook inside during the fall season.  Always practice safe habits like cleaning your oven regularly and using safe cooking methods.  Smoke damage in your home can cause discoloration and odors that can persist for a long time.

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the fire is over to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Is Your Sump Pump Healthy?

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

As the major storm we had a few weeks ago taught us, rainstorms can bring massive devastation to homeowners and business owners alike.  We were contacted by over one thousand people in Fairfield County who had suffered water damage due to excess rain.  Many of these damages may have been avoided if sump pumps were checked before and during the storms.

A sump pump functions by pumping excess water away from your home or business.  When rainwater builds up and flows into your basement, it plays a vital role in keeping your structure dry.  If the pump is faulty or not working to its full potential, your risk of water damage goes up dramatically.

With more summer storms bound to happen, utilize this time to inspect your sump pump.  Make sure that it is actively pumping water out.  You can check this by putting enough water in the hole to activate it.  If it turns on, you are good to go.  If not, you should diagnose the issue.  Debris or obstructions are an often overlooked issue.  Even if the pump turns on, water needs to be able to flow freely away from the foundation.

Sometimes water damage can occur, even when we are on top of being prepared.  In this case, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We have extensive experience and will take care of you and your property.

Customer Satisfaction After Family Emergency

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton was called regarding a biohazard cleanup.  The customer called us after their father had gotten sick in their home.  After the father was taken to the hospital, we arrived on scene.

Two of our best technicians got right to work removing the material from the affected area.  Once all the material was extracted, we sprayed disinfectant to ensure that the area was cleaned, not only to the eye, but microscopically.  After the job was done, the customer took some time to write us to let us know how we did:

“Dear SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton team-

We cannot thank you enough for your kindness and professionalism during the difficult situation with our dad’s apartment. Do You Have Renter’s Insurance?

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

After a fire in your apartment or rented home, there are so many things to worry about, and so many questions that you may be asking yourself:

Is everyone OK?

What responsibilities do I have?

How will this get fixed?

How long will it take to get back to normal?

One thing that many renters in Fairfield County are most concerned with is their belongings.  Obviously, the lives of you, your family, and your pets are the most valuable things.  But this does not undermine the fact that your possessions are also important.

This is why renter’s insurance is so important to have. For a very small price, you can protect your belongings in the event of a fire. Renter’s insurance will typically cover the cost to repair or replace your belongings, such as clothing, furniture and electronics, up to the limits in your policy. If you are displaced due to the fire, additional costs you incur, like hotel bills, can also be covered.

Prepare For A Storm While You Can

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Preparing for a storm, regardless of the season, is a full-scale effort.  But it is important to protect homes and businesses alike.

Inside

- Keep a store of all important things like food, water, and medication on hand.

- Discuss an emergency escape plan.  Make sure escape routes are clear at all times.  Also designate a safe shelter area away from windows inside your home or business.

- Subscribe to your local weather alerts so you have as much notice as possible.

Outside

- If you have patio furniture, or any other items that could blow away in a storm, secure them indoors if a storm is coming.-

If there are trees that are close to your home or business, trim any branches that pose a risk of causing damage.  If any trees are dead, have them removed, as these are very susceptible to fall if winds are high enough.

- If your roof has not been inspected in a while, you should have this service performed.  This will alert you to any structural issues that you may have, which could lead to extra damage in the event of a storm.

While You Wait For Help After A Fire...

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

While your home or business may be severely affected by fire damage, focus on the safety and well-being of people first.  Determine if it is at all safe to stay inside, or if evacuation is necessary.  Treat any injuries with the proper remedies at this time.

After the fire department has extinguished the flames, you will be allowed back in the building or home.  It won’t be pretty, so you will be tempted to start the cleaning process. But there is the potential to make the damage worse by using improper cleaning methods.  You need to call a professional fire remediation company like SERVPRO or Norwalk/Wilton to properly clean the affected areas.

Until help arrives, try to limit how much you move around in the house, so you don’t agitate soot particles that could become lodged in furniture and carpets.  Make sure that you are not tracking soot through the building, either with shoes or bare feet.  You can place old sheets or towels on top to walk around.  You should not attempt to wash any surfaces, as this may just spread the soot and smoke damage, and make it harder for the professionals to remove.

Be Careful With Electricity After Water Damage

3/17/2021 (Permalink)

After having a water damage in your Norwalk home or business, there are many thoughts going through your head.  Many of these will be about fixing the damage that has happened.  But you need to keep your safety in the forefront of your mind, as there are many things to be wary of.  One potential hazard is that of electricity, and the threat it poses after a water damage.

Further Damage

There will be water where the damage occurred.  If there are any live wires that come into contact, they could short or spark.  If either of these occurs in close proximity to a flammable object or material, you could be at risk of a fire starting.

Safety

If a live electrical wire is in contact with the wire, you could be at risk of being electrocuted.  This obviously poses a danger to you and your family or coworkers.  Be extremely careful when navigating through the water at this time.

The first step is to turn off the main power until a professional can assess the damage, and verify that neither of the above scenarios is a risk.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your water damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Get Ready For Spring Storms

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

Spring weather is right around the corner, and spring storms are just a part of that.  Instability in the atmosphere contributes to a high rate of thunderstorms during the spring months.  Water damage due to these storms is common, so homeowners and business owners alike are looking for ways to prevent and limit the extent of the damage.

There are a number of ways you can prevent potential weather damage and prepare for severe weather before disaster strikes:

Clean out gutters and downspouts

When gutters are clogged, water can pool on the roof. This can lead to increased weight on the roof, as well as water flowing into small cracks, and into your home.  Clean your gutters of twigs and leaves to ensure proper drainage.

Check your sump pump

If your sump pump is not working properly, it may fail to pump all the necessary water away from your home or business.  This could lead to water pooling in your basement, leading to water damage.  Make sure the pump is connected correctly and working well.

Inspect the foundation

Even a small crack can let a lot of water in over time.  Check your foundation for these cracks, and seal any that you find.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your storm damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

What Damage Can A Spring Seasonal Storm Cause?

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

As we all know, spring in Fairfield County is unpredictable.  One thing we know though, is that storms are probably inevitable during the spring season.  These storms can bring various damage-causing conditions with them, such as high-speed winds, substantial rainfall, and flooding. These can leave you facing damage to your home or business that could be expensive to fix, and may displace you for a period of time.

There are a few main types of damage that you may suffer.  Learn more about the types below, and what can lead to them during a springtime storm.

Water Damage

Water can seep in through roof damage that occurred before the storm, or as a result of the storm. Damaged shingles and faulty roofs play a role in this.  If gutters or filled with leaves, they can also contribute to damage. Rainwater can flow into your basement, even if your sump pump is working and gets overloaded.

Structural Damage

Debris and trees can fall onto your home, as well as break windows and dent cars.

Fire Damage

A fire can result from a lightning strike.  This could be caused by the strike itself, or from your own electrical system not being able to handle the surge in power.

Other damage can result from water that is not detected, which leads to mold growth.  Animals can also come in through damaged areas in the structure.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your storm damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Do You Have A Fire Sprinkler Or Suppression System?

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Fires are more common than you may think, and even a small fire can leave serious damage in its wake.  Everything from discoloration to odor may result from a small fire that does not even spread very far.  The goal of a sprinkler or suppression system is to limit the spread, and extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.  Some businesses already have them installed, but you may be wondering about getting one for your own business.  Both systems have pros and cons that can inform you on which option is best for you.

Sprinkler Systems

A sprinkler system is made up of a network of ceiling-mounted pipes connected to a water source.  Each sprinkler is sensitive to heat.  When the temperature gets high enough, the sprinklers activate and water flows out.  A sprinkler system is a good method for putting out fires of many types.  Most fires will be extinguished when enough water is introduced.  The negative that comes with a sprinkler system is that there will be a period between when the fire starts and when the system detects high enough heat to work.

Suppression Systems

Fire suppression systems use a combination of dry chemicals, gaseous, foam, and wet agents to suppress and prevent the spread of fire in a building. A suppression system is good for certain types of environments.  One common place you can find one of these systems is in a commercial kitchen, where the probability of a grease fire is higher.  If a building calls for a more delicate solution, there is a suppression system that offers that.

After a fire in your business, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial damage remediation needs.  That’s why we should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for immediate assistance.

Be Prepared For Groundwater Flooding

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Why could you experience groundwater flooding?

There are a few different conditions that can lead to groundwater coming into your home.  The most prevalent contributor to this type of damage is prolonged and substantial rainfall.  These conditions saturate the soil, and the water can no longer be absorbed.  As the water table rises, the water can seep into your basement or lower-level crawlspaces. A condition that is less common, but can happen is excess water from snow melting.  We have had a lot of snow in the Norwalk and Wilton area, and when the temperature begins to rise, groundwater flooding could be an issue.

How much of a problem is groundwater flooding?

This depends on a few factors.  If your basement is unfinished, and you don't have a lot of items stored there, the damage may be low.  The water will need to be extracted, and the area dried.  On the other hand, if you have a finished basement, or have items like furniture or electronics there, the damage can be far more extensive.  Carpets may need replacing, personal belongings may be ruined, and walls may be compromised.

If you have groundwater flooding at your home or business, there are a few steps to take before you call a professional remediation company like SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  First, you should turn the power off.  This will protect you from water interacting with any wiring or live electric currents.  Then you can begin to inspect the area for structural weaknesses like walls and ceilings.

Groundwater flooding can be a stressful event, but we are here to guide you through the remediation process.  Give SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton a call as soon as you can.

Water Damage In Your Ducts

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

You rely on your air ducts for many things, from air quality to temperature regulation.  When your HVAC system is working, it can cause condensation to occur. Your system likely has a drip pan where the condensation can pool or evaporate.  But when your system is working for a long time, the drip pan may overflow, or your emergency line may actually rupture.  Either of these issues will likely cause water damage that can cause both immediate and long-term problems.  If you have this happen, you should make two calls.  The first is to your HVAC company, so they can come out and fix any issue that your system has.  They will check the condensation line to ensure that it is in working order.  If there is a leak or blockage, they can fix it.

The next call you need to make is to a professional water remediation company like SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We will come out to your home or business and fix any water damage that has happened.  This type of water damage is not always visible for some time, so a professional company will be able to fix any immediate damage, as well as eliminate any mold spores that have begun to form.

You should have your HVAC system inspected on a regular basis.  Even then, problems like water damage can still occur.  If this does happen to you, please reach out to us.  SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton is here to help!

Get Renters Insurance To Protect Yourself From Storm Damage

2/19/2021 (Permalink)

This message goes out to anyone who currently rents their living space, whether it be an apartment, house, or condo.  Over the past few weeks, we have seen many people with damage to their homes as a result of storm damage.  Many of these people happened to be renters. When you are a renter there are certain things that the landlord is responsible for.  These are usually items such as the structure itself and appliances.

But in the event of a storm (or any other disaster for that matter), your items are at risk of being damaged.  Without renters insurance, you may be stuck replacing the items with money from your own pocket.  This can range from a couple hundred dollars, to thousands of dollars.  Personal possessions like clothing, electronics, and furniture are all items that are covered in a renters insurance policy. Do yourself a favor, and take out one of these policies on your rented property.

How To Safely Thaw Frozen Pipes

2/18/2021 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe in your home or business can cause damage that ranges from a small pool of water to extensive flooding that ruins an entire floor.

When a frozen pipe bursts, it can lead to massive damage.  In some cases, if you identify the issue before damage occurs, you can attempt to reverse the freezing by thawing the pipes out.

Locate the frozen pipe - If you turn a faucet on, and little to no water comes out, you know that a pipe leading there has frozen.  You can trace the pipe to find where it has frozen.  It will usually have a slight bulge in it, or have frost on the exterior.

Open the faucet - Open both taps to allow water to flow out.  This will relieve pressure, as well as help to thaw any ice buildup.

Begin to thaw the pipe - You can use a few things from around your house to warm your pipes.  Common items are hairdryers, hot towels, space heaters, and heat lamps. Do not use any open flame, as open flame can damage the pipe further, or cause a fire.  Also, start thawing from the faucet, and work your way back.  This will lessen the chance that pressure will build up behind any blockage, and any water will be able to flow out easily.

If you have a similar issue at your business or home, please call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton today.  We can be reached for immediate assistance at 203.324.1642.

Storm Damage Destroys Residential Flooring

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, a home in Norwalk experienced significant water damage as a result of a winter snow storm.

The sheer amount of snow on the roof caused leaks in the rood to grow bigger.  When the snow began to melt, the water poured into the kitchen and adjacent rooms.  While everything was soaked, the flooring suffered the worst damage.  Water got underneath the laminate flooring, ruining the layer above.  The homeowner called us after the water had stopped leaking in and pooling on her floor.

We arrived and extracted the standing water.  We then dried the entire area so that reconstruction could begin.  Our technicians determined that the flooring could not be salvaged, so we pulled it up and began work on a new floor.  All surrounding and affected walls were fitted with new drywall.  You can see the difference in the photo.  We are proud of the work our team did for this homeowner.

Water Damage Destroys Commercial Offices

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

The recent snow storms caused many issues, from excess snow piles to hazardous road conditions.  But for one commercial space, the weather led to costly water damage that wreaked havoc on their business.

The conditions that led to the damage were common, but the outcome was less than ideal.  The damage that was suffered affected both the exterior and interior of the structure. After multiple snowfalls, snow had piled up on the roof.  Because of the temperature fluctuations, the snow began to melt, where it refroze on the eaves of the building.  The gutters became stressed under the weight, and began to separate from the roof.  Some even fell to the ground as a result.

On the inside, damage occurred too.  Melting ice led to a large amount of water that trickled in through the roof, and fell into multiple office spaces inside.  Unfortunately, this happened on the weekend, so no one was available to catch it before it became a larger issue.  When employees came in on Monday, they witnessed the damage.  Flooring was waterlogged, ceiling tiles were sagging, and documents had become soaked.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton responded at the request of the building owner.  When we arrived on scene, we extracted the excess water and began to dry the office out.  Our reconstruction team redid the floors, ceilings, and walls after the areas were dry enough to continue.

If you have a similar issue at your business or home, please call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton today.  We can be reached for immediate assistance at 203.324.1642.

The Best Time To Prepare For A Fire Is Now

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

A fire in your Norwalk or Wilton business can cause many problems, ranging from small to large.  This could be anything from a portion of your office being unusable to significant injury.  Guarding yourself and your employees against this harm can go a long way to mitigating the risk.  Follow these steps to insulate yourself from risk as best as you can.

Make A Plan

Having an action plan in the event of a fire is the first step to protecting your business and the safety of those inside it.  The plan should include evacuation routes, locations of fire extinguishers, and can even have a buddy system included.  Also include a designated meeting area outside and away from the building.  Make sure that all employees receive a copy of the plan, and review the plan on a regular basis.

Monitor Emergency Equipment

Your business should be outfitted with an array of fire safety equipment, like smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.  These are crucial for a prompt response to a fire, but if not maintained, can be unavailable when you need them.  Smoke alarms need to be checked regularly, and batteries may need to be replaced.  Fire extinguishers expire periodically, so make sure that yours are within that time frame.  You can designate an employee to check the equipment once a month to verify that everything is in working order.

Get An Emergency Ready Plan

This is a service that SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton provides to businesses free of charge. We do a thorough walkthrough of your business and gather important information.  This includes, but is not limited to locations of shutoffs, emergency contact numbers, and vendor information.  We give you a copy, and retain one for ourselves.  In the event of an emergency, this allows our team to respond even more efficiently, as we can act quicker with the information at our fingertips.

Why Warmer Weather Can Mean Problems At Your Business

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Fairfield County has had a good amount of snow in the past month.  Snow means that the temperature has stayed below freezing for a good period of time, especially when it accumulates.  Along with freezing temperatures comes the possibility of freezing pipes inside your business. A common misconception is that water expanding as it turns to ice causes a pipe to burst.  It is usually the pressure that builds up behind the ice that causes a breakage. The pressure caused by the water that begins to rush through the pipe threatens to cause a pipe to burst.

Pipes that have been previously frozen may thaw when the weather starts to get more mild.  As thawing occurs, the pressure builds up and causes the fracture in the pipe to occur.

To prevent pipes from freezing:

  • Insulate your pipes properly
  • Keep the temperature at your office warm enough
  • Let faucets drip slightly

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton is available around the clock to assist you with commercial water damage.  Give us a call at 203.324.1642 today.

We know how valuable healthcare professionals are to our safety as a community. You keep us safe and healthy, especially during the current situation. We have been working the last year to do our part in fighting the pandemic.  We are experienced in biohazard cleanup, using the latest tools and methods to disinfect residential and commercial settings.  We use cleaners and techniques in accordance with CDC standards for viral and bacterial decontamination.

Comprehensive Decontamination Methods

We work in two ways to fight contamination.  The first is by focusing on “high-touch” areas, such as door handles, counters, and locks.  It also includes workstation settings for chairs, keyboards, and mouses. These areas are cleaned by hand with CDC-approved solutions.  The second method we employ is the use of fogging, which settles on other surfaces to disinfect them.

You can depend on SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton to help with your clinic’s decontamination needs. Call us at 203.324.1642 for 24/7 assistance.

Our methods designed to provide decontamination are predicated on present knowledge, which is subject to vary, as the situation continues to develop.

Our Reconstruction Services Are Top Notch

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

There are a number of types of damages that can affect your home or business.  Floods, fires, burst pipes, and mold are just a few of these issues. In most cases, our methods of remediating damage are enough to fix the issue, and restore you to preloss condition.  But sometimes, we need to go deeper to solve the problem.

After a water damage, you may have floors that are warped that need replacing.  Maybe a major part of your drywall is too saturated, and has begun to disintegrate.

After a fire, portions of your home may need to be replaced where structural damage occurred. Another common outcome is that firefighting efforts have left large amounts of water that soak into other materials.

That is where our reconstruction services come in.  Not only do we fix the damage, but we will also fix any structural or cosmetic damage to your home or business.  We have decades of experience in the construction industry, and bring that to every job we do.  Whether you need walls rebuilt, or new floors installed, we have you covered.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton gives you peace of mind when you know that we can handle the entire remediation process.  Other companies will fix the damage, but leave your space with the structural damage that had occurred.  Rest assured that we will help you from start to finish, without you having to manage two companies.

Burst Pipe Checklist

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

When temperatures get below a certain temperature, pipes that are not properly insulated may burst.  This is due to the water inside expanding as it freezes.  If expansion is drastic enough, it can rupture the pipe, and leak water into your home or business. These steps should be performed as soon as you notice a burst pipe:

Shut the water off

Immediately turn the water off for the whole building, whether a house or business.  This will prevent more water from flowing, thus preventing more damage from happening.

Let water sources empty

Next, do your best to relieve pressure in your pipes.  To do this, run your faucets and showers, and flush your toilet.  This should remove most of the water in the pipes.

Document the damage

You will probably be filing a claim with your insurance company.  The more photos that you have of the damage, the easier the claims process should be.

Do what you can

There will be standing water pooling in areas near the burst pipe.  The less time this water has to interact with your home, the better. You can use towels to soak up water. This will stabilize the situation until professionals can arrive.  If the water appears dirty, it may have contamination.  In that case, try not to come into contact, as it may have harmful bacteria in it.

Call the professionals

SERVPRO is the industry leader in water damage restoration. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton is available 24/7, and our centralized location ensures we can be on scene quickly.  This aids in minimizing damage in your home or business.  Give us a call at 203.324.1642.

Baseboard Heater Safety Tips

It is pretty rare to find baseboard heating elements in any construction built in the last couple decades.  But if your house is older than that, you may still have these types of heaters in your home or business.  They are generally safe and relatively efficient, but can be a fire hazard under the right conditions.  Make sure to take the necessary steps to protect you and your family or business.

Don’t Block the Flow of Air

The heater warms as chilly air is brought into the unit and coils inside warm the air. That air is pushed into the room as more cool air is drawn into the bottom.  If the flow is obstructed, the coils can overheat, causing a fire hazard.  If there is anything flammable in close proximity to the heater, it may ignite.  Additionally, any curtains should be hung so that they do not end too close to the heater.

Watch Children

Two separate safety issues can arise from children near baseboard heaters.  First, they may try to put their hands inside the heater, where the hot coils are.  If they touch them, they may burn themselves.  Second, if children leave items near the heater, the items bay ignite from overheating.  If your children are old enough to understand, you can educate them on these dangers.

Monitor Dust Accumulation

As air is drawn into the heater unit, dust and small particles will also be drawn in.  If this is allowed to accumulate, it can cause a safety issue when coming into contact with the heating elements.  To avoid this, just vacuum occasionally around each baseboard unit.  It can also cause a foul odor that is unpleasant to smell.

Space Heater Safety Tips

1/8/2021 (Permalink)

We are finally experiencing some colder temperatures in Fairfield County. Many homes and businesses will be using space heaters to provide that extra boost of comfort. A space heater does a great job at that, but they can also pose a fire risk when not placed correctly or improperly used.  According to the National Fire Prevention Association, space heaters account for one third of all winter heating fires, and a staggering 80% of winter heating deaths every year. Keep you, your home, and your family safe this winter by practicing these safety precautions:

  1. Make sure that there is ample room for the heater in any space that you place it in. Set it at least three feet from anything combustible like beds, curtains, or clothing.
  2. If possible, purchase a heater with a tip-over switch. This feature will automatically shut the power off if the heater is knocked over.
  3. Unplug the heater when it is not in use.  Like any electrical appliance, space heaters can malfunction.  If it turns on when you are not home, the risk of a fire increases greatly.
  4. Make a habit of checking the space heater for wear and tear.  Any damage to the heater could cause it to function improperly.  Also remove any dust that has accumulated, as it could catch fire.
  5. Make sure that smoke alarms are in working order.  This should be done anyway, but is especially important if you are operating a space heater in your home.

While we love our space heaters as much as the next, it's very important to operate them with precaution. It may mean the difference between a warm home and a potential fire.  If you do experience a fire as a result of a space heater, or any other type of fire damage, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We are available 24/7 for assistance.

You Find An Appliance Leaking. What Next?

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton responded to a home that suffered extensive water damage as a result of a dishwasher leaking.  The homeowner didn’t know what steps to take to stem the flow. The damage could have been minimized if they had taken a few simple steps before we arrived to do the bulk of the cleanup.  Here are a few steps that you can take to make your life a little easier in the wake of an event like this.

  1. Turn off the water

Quickly identify the source of the leak, and shut that water line.  This step is critical for stopping costly damage.

  1. Unplug electronics

As unfortunate as water damage is, it doesn’t compare to your personal safety.  Avoid the risk of electrocution by unplugging any electronics in the vicinity of the leak.

  1. Contact the experts

Time is of the essence.  You should make two calls; one to your plumber, and the other to a certified professional restoration company.  The plumber will fix the leak, so no further damage occurs.  The restoration company will dry the area and cleanup any other resulting damage.

  1. Take photos

While you are waiting for the plumber and remediation company to arrive, document the damage.  Having photos of the damage and its source will make the claims process go smoother and quicker.

If you have water damage that results from an appliance leak, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton at 203.324.1642. We offer remediation services at any time, and pride ourselves on our response time in the face of emergencies.

How To Dry Cabinets After Water Damage In Your Norwalk Home

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO will get your cabinets properly dried after a Norwalk water damage.

We know exactly what your Norwalk cabinets will need after water damage.

Residential cabinetry can easily be affected by water due to drainpipes sitting very close to them.  A flooding sink or dishwasher in your kitchen or bathroom can make water get caught both under and behind cabinets in those rooms.

Drying your cabinets after water damage on your property is critical. Many materials that cabinets are made from are particularly susceptible to damage. One such material is particleboard.  This material will immediately begin to break down, which means that it is almost always unsalvageable. Cabinets constructed from real wood can develop mold or begin to warp when in contact with enough water.  These may be rescued, but quick action is necessary.  If you notice water damage to your cabinets, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton immediately. We will respond quickly to begin the remediation process.  While we’re on our way, there are a few steps that you can take to increase the chance that your cabinets can be salvaged:

  • Take items off of shelves and out of cabinets.  This will allow you to see how much damage has occurred and remove standing water.  If the structural integrity of your cabinets has started to be compromised, this will decrease the chance that the items will fall and break.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible.

Remediating water-affected cabinets is not as straightforward as it may seem.  The layers of wood and drywall present can greatly increase drying time, and must be done in the proper way.  Our skilled technicians know the correct way to execute these steps, like cutting holes in the drywall to facilitate airflow behind the area.

What To Know If Your Neighbor Has A Fire

8/13/2020 (Permalink)

A fire can spring up from nowhere, and can engulf a home or business very quickly.  No one wants their property to suffer fire damage, whether it be a total or partial loss.  What many people do not know is that even a fire occurring in close proximity to your structure can cause significant damage, especially to an asphalt roof.

How does this happen?

A nearby fire can cause damage to your roof by producing a massive amount of heat.  This damage can be diagnosed if you can observe any of the following situations.

  • Melted or runny asphalt
  • Distortion in the top coating of the shingle
  • Blistering due to heat or burning embers
  • Singed shingles

If you can see any of these, your roof may be compromised.  This damage, if not fixed properly, could lead to issues ranging from improper insulation to increased risk for water damage.

If you or your neighbor has a fire, take the time to inspect your roof.  If it looks at all damaged, make sure to get the problem dealt with as soon as possible.  SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton is skilled in roof repair after a fire.  Give us a call today at 203.324.1642.

Springtime Grill Fire Safety

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

We are getting very close to the spring season, and with that comes warmer weather. We can’t wait to get outside to enjoy the temperature and new growth that this time has to offer.  With the beginning of spring, there are specific fire dangers that are unique to this time of year.  We leave behind the dangers associated with wood stoves, furnaces, and Christmas trees, but there are things to watch out for that could cause fire damage in the coming months.

A popular springtime activity is grilling.  But after a long time being unused, your grill could present a fire hazard.  Fire departments respond to over 10,000 fires that originated from a grill, with 4,500 of them causing damage to surrounding structures.  Unfortunately, these fires also caused a yearly average of 10 deaths.

Clean your grill of any debris that it may have accumulated, whether in storage or outside.  This will reduce the risk of fire damage, as well as keep your food safe as you cook it.  Make sure the propane tank is still correctly installed.  Leaking propane is an easy way to start a fire, as well as cause injury to those around it.

If you happen to suffer from a springtime fire, give SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton a call at (203) 324-1642.  We are available 24/7 to provide assistance.

How SERVPRO Of Norwalk/Wilton Reduces Flood Damage To Your Business

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the water damage that you have, action must be taken quickly. A few simple but important steps made at the right time can go a long way to limiting the extent that water damage ravages your business.  The upside of working with a professional remediation company like SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton is the degree of experience we bring to every job, guaranteeing that you get the best service possible.

Water damage can affect many parts of your business, including the insulation in your walls and ceilings. Once wet, the effectiveness of the material becomes compromised.  This can lead to worsened temperature control and threats to your plumbing system. Additionally, mold can develop quickly, leading to foul odors and potential health risks. Our SERVPRO experts examine the insulation for moisture.  If present, we extract the moisture so neither of these adverse conditions occur.

Water that accumulates on the floor will inevitably make its way into the walls and subfloor material.  Sometimes this damage is undetectable to the naked eye. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton address both of these issues as part of our remediation process.  Our technicians make small holes in the wall to check for moisture levels, and dry the area when necessary. For flooring, we have specialized floor drying systems that pull moisture out of multiple layers.

To limit damage down the road after water damage in your Norwalk or Wilton business, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We are accessible every minute of every day, and are ready to respond quickly to begin the remediation process.

Fire Damage Restoration In Norwalk Warehouses

3/18/2020 (Permalink)

When a Norwalk or Wilton warehouse has fire damage, the result is often a business interruption. A storeroom or warehouse is the foundation of any business that keeps physical stock on the premise. SERVPRO professionals investigate the damage prior to starting remediation and restoration procedures. It is important to test different deposits to decide the best cleaning strategies.  We also will address any water damage that may have occurred due to fire fighting measures. Here are the ways that we specifically address the unique conditions in a warehouse.

Stock And Material Remediation

After a warehouse suffers any type of fire damage, the inventory inside is often affected.  This represents a potential financial pitfall for business owners. When possible, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton technicians clean the inventory so that the items can be used and sold. We may do this either on site, or via our pack-out service, where we clean them at our facility.

Ventilation And HVAC Cleaning

A fire causes powdery soot to become airborne.  After smoke and soot particles are airborne, the HVAC system can further circulate them if turned on.  SERVPRO technicians clean the ducts as part of our post-fire protocol. This eliminates any foul odors.

Special Attention Paid To Flooring

Elastic security mats are a typical element in storerooms with concrete floors. On the off chance that they are harmed by smoke or soot, they have the potential to retain odor-causing particulates.   We clean such materials with specialized cleaning solutions that will not cause further damage like discoloration.

Contact SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton if your business suffers any fire damage. Time is of the essence, and our prepared professionals show up rapidly and make it "Like it never even happened."

The Difference Between Storm “Watch” and “Warning”

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

Know the difference so you can be prepared.

A storm watch implies that the potential exists for the advancement of extreme rainstorms or tornadoes, contingent on the particular sort of watch given. On account of a tornado watch, this doesn’t imply that a tornado has been seen or even demonstrated on radar. In fact, it just implies that conditions are positive for the development of tornadoes and rainstorms. Additionally, a serious storm watch implies that conditions are only favorable for the improvement of extreme weather, and doesn't mean that serious weather patterns have been observed. In the event of a storm watch, do not panic.  Keep informed of how the weather is developing so that you are not caught off guard by a storm or other weather event.

A storm warning is more serious, and requires a more prompt reaction and ought to be adhered to. An extreme rainstorm alert demonstrates that serious atmospheric conditions are imminent, or happening already.  While a storm watch is a more loose term, a storm warning has defined parameters. According to the US government, this means that wind speeds exceed 58 miles per hour. It can also mean that hail larger than an inch in diameter has been observed. Because of these conditions, caution should be taken when traveling.  In very severe instances, shelter should be taken.

If your home or business suffers storm damage, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We will respond quickly to help you and your building.

Signs Of Light Water Damage In Norwalk

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage in a Norwalk home can occur from a small amount of water, not just a big flood. A small leak in your roof can lead to a small amount of water creeping in, causing the need for water damage remediation. Some water will evaporate on its own, and will not cause any damage.  That being said, you may have trouble determining at what point that you need professional help from a company like SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton. If you are on the fence, look for either one of these indicators of minor water damage, that if left untreated, could cause more serious damage.

Warped and Discolored Walls, Ceilings, or Floors

If you observe any of these in your home or business, you may have minor water damage. Surfaces like drywall or hardwood floors often change shape or color when water soaks them, and then evaporates.  If you have not had visible water, but have these conditions, you should investigate further. You may unearth minor water damage that has happened, or it currently happening.

A Surface That Is Moist When Felt

On the off chance that you discover a wall, floor, or interior roofing that is wet to the touch with no clear reason, odds are that this dampness might be caused by a small, but constant amount of water coming into contact with it.  When water is present behind any of these surfaces for too long, secondary damage like mold growth and foul odors can occur.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has decades of experience remediating and restoring both water and mold damage.  If you have either heavy or light water damage, call us today.

Important Tips to Prevent Electrical Fire Damage in Norwalk

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO of Norwalk after suffering fire damage. Read below to learn some tips for reducing your risk of electrical fires.

Residential electrical fires cause over 40,000 fires every year.  The financial fallout of these fires easily tops $1 billion in property damage. This includes structural damage and loss of personal items. Whether you have fire damage from a defective appliance or faulty wiring, it can be near impossible to remediate with your own equipment.  But you can take steps to stop the damage from occurring in the first place.

Reducing Electrical Fire Risks

  • Use surge protectors when possible. When electrical outlets become overburdened, the risk of an electrical fire goes up exponentially.  A surge protector defends against spikes in voltage that can lead to malfunction.
  • Never leave electronics unattended. Heat-producing appliances like space heaters and irons should never be left unattended.
  • Practice outlet safety. Keep the area around outlets free of combustible materials.  This includes carpets, rugs, and papers.

If your Norwalk home or business requires fire damage remediation, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton technicians are available 24/7 to address the issue.  We specialize in remediating fire damage, and restoring your property to preloss condition.

Springtime Gutter Precautions

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

For a homeowner, there are always things that need to be done to protect your house. A few of these are especially prevalent as winter turns to spring.  In order to be properly protected, one important preventative measure is to inspect your gutters and downspouts regularly. Avoiding certain issues with your drainage system can save you time, money, and headache in the long run.

Issues to watch for include the following:

  1. Standing Water
When water accumulates in your gutters and does not drain, it provides an excellent habitat for insects and other pests to thrive.  Mosquitos especially like this setting. Inspect your gutters to ensure that they are free of debris that could cause water to back up and not drain properly.
  2. Excess Weight
Another issue that can result from debris and standing water is extra weight, causing strain on the structure of your drainage system.  Over time, the heavy gutters can pull away from the house, allowing water to seep into the home.  This can cause mold, as well as damage to shingles and siding.
  3. Damaged Shingles
Shingles are a vital part of your overall drainage system.  Weathered or damaged shingles may become cracked, which may let rainwater into your home. Roof leaks may lead to mold damage and rotting wood.

If your home or business has water damage as a result of a faulty drainage system, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  Our trained professionals have years of experience, and know how to quickly and properly remediate water damage.

Storm Water In Your Crawl Space

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Many homeowners have preventative measures in place for when a rainstorm occurs.  This can be anything from a working sump pump to a properly maintained gutter system.  One area of a home that is often overlooked is the crawlspace. Unless you use your crawl space for storage, it is probably unfinished, so initial damage is not the main concern. Secondary damage, on the other hand, is a major concern.  Mold growth and musty odors can result if moisture is not addressed. If you do observe water or dampness in your crawl space, it needs to be remediated quickly. This will ensure that If you do have water in your crawlspace, it needs to be removed as soon as possible.  This will help ensure there is no future mold growth, which can spread and cause larger issues. The trained professionals at SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton can help. Call us as soon as you suspect you have water in your home.

Lightning: Fact Or Fiction?

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes claim the lives of dozens of people.  Countless others are severely wounded, which can lead to physical and neurological damage.  Unfortunately, a number of these instances may have been prevented if not due to misinformation.

Myth: If a storm rolls in, you should crouch down to minimize your risk of being hit by lightning.

Fact: According to the National Weather Service, “Crouching doesn't make you any safer outdoors. Run to a substantial building or hard topped vehicle. If you are too far to run to one of these options, you have no good alternative. You are NOT safe anywhere outdoors.”

Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place twice.

Fact: "Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly, especially if it's a tall, pointy, isolated object. The Empire State Building is hit an average of 23 times a year.”

Myth: If there doesn’t appear to be a storm directly overhead, you are safe from lightning strikes.

Fact: People are often struck around three miles from the storm.  On a few occasions, strikes have happened up to 15 miles away.

Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, a tree is a safe place to hide under.

Fact: People believe that lightning will strike the tree because it is higher, and they will be safe.  On the contrary, taking shelter under a tree is the second-leading cause of lightning related deaths.

Call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton if lightning damages your home or business during a storm.  We have the knowledge and equipment to remediate any damage that may have been caused by stormy weather.

2/17/2020 (Permalink)

It was used in building construction for many years, as it is a great electrical insular and is highly heat-resistant.  It was used in such materials as siding and drywall mainly for its fireproof properties.

The asbestos fibers are especially dangerous because they are almost invisible and carry no odor.  If inhaled, they can cause serious respiratory issues, even many years later.  If you know or suspect that you have asbestos present in your building, schedule an asbestos inspection.

Pay Attention To Discolored Ceiling Tiles

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

In many businesses and commercial buildings, dropped tile ceilings are a common choice for a few reasons.  They are easy to replace, allow easy access to the area above, and are also a very affordable option.  This leads them to be an easy choice for installation.  They sometimes become discolored or stained, which is unsightly.  But beyond the eyesore, there may be a larger problem that is causing the issue.

These tile ceilings have been installed for a long time, as they have remained affordable throughout the years.  And outside of external forces, they are a durable option.  But because they may not have been replaced in a long time, they can show their age by taking on any pollutants in the environment.  This can be anything from pollen to cigarette smoke.

Another reason that discoloration may develop is light exposure.  Over time, these dropped tile ceilings can become stained as a result of sun exposure or from the light that is given off by the bulbs in the office light fixtures.

Both of these issues are annoying, but are not reasons for concern.  You may choose to replace discolored tiles, but if it is due to the two reasons above, it is not a necessary step.

The reason that you want to pay attention to discolored tiles is that it may be indicative of water damage or mold damage. Stains on the tiles, while unsightly, can be an alert for a leak above.  If undiagnosed, this could lead to mold growth.  Either way, action must be taken.

If you observe discolored ceiling tiles in your business or commercial building, it may be a smart move to investigate.  You may find that the discoloration is a symptom of a bigger problem.  Addressing that problem early can prevent the need for costlier and more extensive repairs down the road.

Do Not Use Bleach To Kill Mold In Your Business

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

When you find mold in your business, you may be tempted to clean it yourself.  The urge to rid yourself of harmful mold could make the problem worse.  Many people think that bleach is a useful tool to combat mold growth, but this is not true.  Contrary to popular belief, bleach may not kill mold.  In fact, it can have the opposite affect.

Bleach cannot neutralize mold growth when applied to porous surfaces like wood or drywall. The spores may actually adapt and become resistant to the bleach. Bleach is largely made up of chlorine and water. When applied to a surface, the chlorine might kill the surface mold, but the water in bleach penetrates deeper, and the moisture can in turn feed the mold, causing more growth.

If you find mold in your business, do not attempt to clean it yourself.  Call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We have trained professionals who are knowledgeable in mold remediation. We use the right combination of solutions and techniques to get the job done right.

The Importance of HVAC And Duct Cleaning

2/9/2020 (Permalink)

Exposed ductwork lit by construction lamps Your ducts could be in need of a cleaning.

If you are a business or home owner, you are probably familiar with your duct or HVAC system.  These forced air systems are made up of many parts, all of which are important the effectiveness of the system. Each part of the system need to be cleaned periodically, a service that many people overlook.  This can lead to many issues. If not properly maintained and regularly serviced, the systems may operate at less than optimal levels.  Even more importantly, these systems could accumulate dust from the interior of the building, or pollen from outside world. If a sufficient level of moisture is present, the chance of mold spores developing is much higher.

If you have one of these systems, and it has not been checked or serviced in a while, you may consider getting that done.  It could improve your indoor air quality, and prevent any of the negative effects mentioned above.

Types Of Secondary Damage To Watch Out For

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers water damage from a storm, burst pipe, or groundwater, there are immediate issues that must be addressed. These are such things as wet walls, soaked subfloor, and damaged possessions. Once these visible issues are remediated, if the job is not done correctly, there are a few secondary problems that can arise.

1. If a hardwood floor becomes wet or waterlogged, water seeps into the floorboards.  Even if the floor is dry to the touch, residual moisture in the wood can cause the boards to warp and shift over time.  This can be a costly repair and may require removal of precious hardwood.

2. When there is standing water, or water that is dripping down a wall, that material must be properly dried.  If it is not, the material that the drywall is made up of may begin to break down.  We use advanced technology to identify if there is moisture in or behind the wall, and replace the material if necessary.

3. The most common type of secondary damage is mold growth.  Spores grow when there is moisture present and warmer temperatures prevail.  While all visible water may be eliminated, if there is enough left, it can be the perfect conditions for mold to grow.

SERVPRO of Stamford gets the job done right the first time, which greatly reduces the risk of any of these types of secondary damages occurring.  We are available 24/7 to remediate water, fire, mold, and many other kinds of disasters.

Attic Cleaning With Dry Ice Blasting

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

progress of dry ice blasting See the difference dry ice blasting makes.

This multi family home suffered extensive fire damage. Fortunately, parts of the structure only suffered cosmetic damage that we can remove, which also eliminates much of the odor. Odir is using ice blasting, a great tool we use at SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton, to restore the attic.

Dry ice blasting is a unique tool that has many advantages, especially in a residential setting.  First, the process leaves no waste.  The dry ice evaporates and no trace of the process is left behind.  Also, the process is green.  It uses no chemicals or solvents that can cause health hazards. The only substance employed is the dry ice itself.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

Sump Pump To The Rescue

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Sump Pumps Prevent Water Damage That Insurance May Not Cover

Sometimes, home insurance policies are hard to interpret. Unfortunately, many homeowners don’t truly understand what is covered until it is too late. If you can get a head start on prevention, especially the prevention of water damage, you won’t even need to call your insurance agent. If rain that damages your home has first touched the ground, your insurance coverage may be voided. Thus, both floods and ground seepage due to rain may not be covered by insurance. As if nature-inspired flooding weren’t bad enough, sometimes insurance won’t cover a backed up sewer line.

What DOES Insurance Cover If It Doesn’t Cover Groundwater?

What is covered? Insurance policies use the term “sudden and internal”. If your plumbing bursts, fails, or freezes and then damages your home, your insurance should cover the damage. If your toilet, washing machine, or bathtub overflows, your insurance will probably cover that also. And if your home experiences damage resulting from a leaking roof, your insurance will cover the damage – although insurance most likely will not cover the actual roof. While rain damage or snow damage is covered, flooding is not.

What Can A Homeowner Do To Compensate For Insurance?

What is a homeowner to do with these potential uninsurable threats to their home? Water damage is no joke. Is there a way to prevent water damage in the first place? Yes! Installing a sump pump in your basement or crawl space can prevent thousands of dollars of damage due to a flooded basement. Plus, a sump pump can help prevent mold and mildew from growing in your basement.

How Does A Sump Pump Work?

A sump pump stands in the lowest part of your basement or crawlspace, in a gravel-base hole, also known as a sump pit. When the pit fills with water, the sump pump goes to work, moving water from the pit through pipes running out of your home to a location where the water can safely drain away from the foundation of your home. A check valve at the pump end prevents water from flowing back to the sump pit.

If your Norwalk home or business suffers water damage as a result of not having a sump pump, or your sump pump malfunctioning, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.

Electrical Safety Questionnaire

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, hire a certified electrician to inspect your home and to potentially update your electrical system:

  • Before plugging in an appliance, do you first unplug another appliance to prevent tripping a circuit breaker or blowing a fuse?
  • Because you don’t have enough outlets, do you run multiple extension cords or plug multiple cords into a single outlet?
  • ïDo your lights dim when you use certain appliances?
  • Are your small appliances like toasters or irons slow to heat?
  • Because you don’t have enough three- or four-way light switches, do you enter rooms and stairways in darkness?
  • Are your furniture arrangements limited because your electrical outlets are limited?

The name of the prevention game for electrical fires: don’t overload, don’t use old, don’t abuse your electrical cords, plugs, and outlets. You don’t want to experience the subsequent fire damage following an electrical fire. A qualified, licensed electrician can help you increase the capacity of your home’s electrical service or add new branch circuits, increasing the number of outlets and decreasing your furniture arrangements to accommodate a limited number of outlets.

If your Norwalk or Wilton home or business suffers damage from an electrical fire, do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment to get the job done thoroughly and rapidly.

Different Types of Storm Damage

8/3/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme storms can be terrifying and perilous, and wellbeing must be your first need. In the event that your town has seen serious issues, be cautious. In the event that you think your home has been fundamentally damaged or if flood hazard remains, don't go inside until an expert says it's protected. Putting in a couple of evenings at a companion's home or in a crisis haven is a little cost to pay.

Snow Storm Damage

Winter storms assault a significant part of the U.S. and Canada consistently, and zones that don't get hit with snow regularly manage ice storms and solidifying precipitation. When you're managing snowstorms, lake impact storms and snow squalls, damage to your home can incorporate rooftop and auxiliary damage from overwhelming snow just as damage to sash, outside funnels, and siding. These frigid storms regularly accompany high winds, which can fuel damage by making shingles loosen up. These storms can unleash destruction on utility lines.

At the point when ice storms hit, you may should be significantly more wary. These storms are described by leaving at any rate a fourth of an inch of ice on surfaces. They can make rooftops breakdown, trees to break and electrical cables to snap. Attempt to remain in your home until the ice storm has passed and prepared with food, water, supplies, and power sources.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damage

Lightning storms can happen any place in the U.S., and they bring the danger of flames and extreme basic damage. Regardless of whether your lightning bars work appropriately by directing the vitality to the ground, it's conceivable to see damage to electrical wiring, machines, radio wires, satellite dishes, link or phone lines, and steel structure. Except if there are indications of flame, make certain to remain inside until the storm is over on the grounds that your home will secure you.

Thunderstorms accompany dangers regardless of whether you aren't hit by lightning. You could see flooding, hail, and high winds.

High Winds, Tornadoes and Hurricane Damage

High winds can happen for all intents and purposes anyplace, and thousands of tornadoes and hurricanes hit the U.S. consistently. Extreme winds are characterized as surpassing 50-60 mph. Damage from wind can be across the board and can influence your structure as well as encompassing landscaping and black-top. Know about the potential for falling trees and posts and damaged electrical cables, and deal with these issues immediately. After the storm, look at your property for basic damage to the home, including windows, siding, and rooftops. In the most extraordinary situations, rooftops can be passed clean over.

If you have any storm damage to your home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton.

When we are called to a water damage, it is essential to be able to rapidly determine the extent of water damage in a house or business.

Getting your home or business dry is crucial in the aftermath of water damage. With excess moisture, mold and mildew can develop and bacteria can multiply. That’s why SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton uses moisture meters during and after completion of water remediation work to ensure that structures are properly dried.

Moisture meters can reach areas that may otherwise be overlooked or not considered as being affected by moisture. These include areas such as basement walls, spaces between layers of drywall, concrete subfloors, and beneath carpet and tile. Identifying potential damage to these lesser-suspected areas can save thousands of dollars in repairs later.

Hole In The Roof

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can dramatically affect your home.  One thing that people don’t realize is that in order to properly extinguish a fire, the fire department often has to damage the home in the process.  Two measures that cause damage to the home are sometimes taken.  First, a lot of water is often used to extinguish a fire, which causes water damage to the home.  The second measure is cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof so that heat and smoke can escape,  They do this so that cool air can flow into the house, allowing for easier and safer entry to put out the flames.  This picture shows one such hole.  As part of our rebuild process, we will fix this hole that was made by the firefighters.

According to the National Fire Protection Association a “flash fire” is defined as a type of short-duration fire that spreads rapidly through a fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitible liquid, without the production of damaging pressure. This is what it looks like when a flash fire occurs as a result of improper use of propane tanks.  One unit in this multi-family building exploded due to rapid flame movement throughout.  Once the fire department had left, our crew got to work restoring the property.  Please use extreme caution when using and storing flammable substances.  If you suffer a fire or smoke damage at your home or business, please do not hesitate to call us.

Ice Storms Can Lead To Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Ice storms can cause significant damage, if not directly, then indirectly.  This pictures shows how heavy ice ice, and the effect it can have on trees that it covers.  If you have trees around your house that have branches overhead, this could be a potentially damaging situation.  If ice forms around tree limbs, they can snap off and damage your home. This could lead to secondary issues like water damage or frozen pipes. While it is warm out, trim overhanging branches that could be large enough to cause damage to your rood or siding. If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Dirt From Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, sometimes it is not as easy as removing the water and drying everything out.  This low-income housing complex had a burst pipe on their second floor.  The water leaked down to the first floor, and carried with it a whole lot of dirt and debris.  The photo demonstrates just how much dirt the water stream actually brought with it. Our crew removed the water, dried everything out, and then washed the floors so that the customer was happy.  If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Showroom Flooding

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

This was one of our trickiest jobs that we have taken on in recent history.  A pipe burst in a local art gallery and interior design showroom.  Due to the high value of many of the items in the business, we had to act extremely quickly to save them.  We were on scene within 30 minutes to begin extracting the water, and removing the valuable items. We set up our drying equipment to eradicate the remaining moisture and had them back in business in the shortest period of time.  If you have water in your business from a burst pipe, please call us.

Huge Water Extraction

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This person called us with over a foot of water in their large finished basement.  We were on scene within minutes with our large water pump to extract the water.  Usually, we only need one hose to pull all the water out of any given structure.  There was so much water here that we had to use two hoses. Luis can be seen here making sure the water is flowing out properly to minimize the amount of time it took to remove all the water.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Ceiling Removal Due To Storm Damage

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This picture showcases the effects of not having a leak-proof roof.  This person had postponed re-shingling their roof.  But unfortunately, they experienced the effects of that decision.  Water leaked in over the family room and started to soak the furniture.  We were called to fix the situation, which required removing a portion of the ceiling to allow for proper drying.  Make sure that your roof is up-to-date, and you address any issues as soon as they arise. If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Liquor Store Flooding

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a local liquor store was going about their business when a piece of their ceiling tile fell onto the floor.  Over the next few hours, most of the ceiling had collapsed into the store.  Rain was causing the waterlogged material to become heavy and fall down.  This soaked a lot of the merchandise and business had to be halted for a long time.  We came in, removed the water and also carried out all the debris. If you have water in your business from a storm, please call us.

Acting Quickly May Save Your Belongings

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a basement floods, everything that is sitting on the floor gets wet.  Some things may be okay, but most of your belongings will become damaged, the extent of which only gets worse the longer they stay submerged.  Many times, if the water is pumped out and extracted quickly, some items can be saved, at least to some extent.  We specialize in large-scale water extraction, and can pump thousands of gallons of water in a timely manner.  This is a photo of a recent homeowner’s basement who called us.  With our equipment, we got the water out, and began the drying process.

Fire In The Garage

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a fire broke out in a home and adjoining garage structure.  Fortunately, none of the inhabitants, one of which was a small dog, were hurt during the ordeal.  The fire consumed most of the interior, and spread rapidly into the garage, pictured here.  You can see just how hot the fire was, based on the damage to the car that was parked away from the house.  We responded quickly by boarding up the structure, and are now in the process of cleaning and deodorizing the interior. Once that step is done, the rebuild can proceed.

Mold Containment

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Mold outbreaks are something to absolutely take seriously.  If mold spores become airborne, they can be inhaled.  This may lead to unwanted and harmful respiratory issues.  But when a mold damage occurs, it usually happens in one part of the home or business.  How do we manage this issue while safely and quickly removing mold? When dealing with mold, we build containment areas to be sure no spores are spread.  We use disposable plastic to keep the harmful particles out of unaffected areas.  This also allows for a minimal disturbance to the daily routine so that business and life can continue.

Leaky Roof No Match For Rainstorm

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

During a recent rainstorm, the roof leaked overnight at a local educational facility.  Unfortunately, the damage was not noticed until the following morning.  We were called in to fix the situation, which included extracting the water and dehumidifying the space once the bulk of the water was removed.  This photo does not show water that we pumped out.  It actually shows how much water we pulled out of the air with a dehumidifier.  All that moisture would have probably led to mold down the road if left untreated.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Eliminating Secondary Fire Damage

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, it is not only the building that has the fire that is affected. Often, the surrounding structures suffer secondary damage like a layer of soot and smoke odors. If not properly cleaned in a timely fashion, the issue can lead to more permanent damage that unfortunately cannot be reversed. Here we see Odir cleaning the floors of an affected apartment to remove a thin layer of soot that will also remove the resulting odors. Because we responded within hours of the fire being extinguished, this will ensure that no long-term damage will occur.

Crawl Space Cleaning

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

This customer called us with mouse droppings and other debris in the crawl space under their business. This was causing foul odors to permeate up into the actual retail area.  Because business was conducted in the space, a loss of business was at stake.  We knew that we needed to take care of the issue quickly to minimize the effects on the tenants business.  We came in and cleaned both visible and invisible contaminants, and left the space fresh. We can see Roberto here, proud of the good job he did.

Small Pipe, Big Problems

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

It is astonishing just how much damage a little water can do. Take a look at the damage in this bedroom. The entire ceiling had to be removed and some of the walls were affected as well. You can see the size of the pipe that caused the damage.  If a pipe this size can produce that much water, imagine if the pipe had been one of the larger ones in the home.

We had to remove the ceiling and portions of the wall to begin the drying process.  Once that is done, we can bring in our fans and dehumidifiers.

Mild Winters Cause Mold

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve had a pretty mild winter, which means that any water that remains from melting ice or snow will stick around. This leads to mold, which can be harmful to humans and also pets if ingested. This issue will only grow as the weather begins to warm up for the spring season.  We can safely and effectively clean mold from surfaces like the exposed wood seen here. We are spraying disinfectant to ensure that after cleaning, mold will not return.

One piece of equipment that we also use is a High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier.  They work by filtering air through a fine mesh, removing harmful particles like mold, dust mites, and pollen that can cause adverse health affects.

Winter Cleaning Tips

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperature drops, we tend to spend more time indoors. Because this occurs, why not take the extra step to make sure you have a home you enjoy spending time in.

Here are a few small cleaning projects that you can undertake during the winter months to ensure that your home is both safe and cozy for the winter months.

Empty dryer vents - Pull the dryer out from the wall and disconnect the hose from the back of the appliance.  Use a vacuum to suck any loose lint from the exhaust hose.  Not only is this a step to take for safety measures, this will lead to a more efficient dryer performance. This can lower electricity bills a small amount.

Steam carpets and couches - Sometimes vacuuming doesn't get the whole job done. Even if your carpets look clean, carpets should be deep cleaned by a professional to eliminate any harmful and gross materials that a vacuum might miss.

Attic Fire

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is a recent fire that started in a residential attic.  The fire started when some flammable material was left in front of a skylight, which ignited under extreme heat.  The fire started in the attic, and spread down to one side of the house.  SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton was called in to remediate the damage.  We will be providing a few different services in this case.  First, we will be packing up contents and belongings to store while other work is being done.  We will also be cleaning the soot off the walls, as well as deodorizing the area from the smoke smell.  Then, reconstruction can begin on the actual frame of the house.

To avoid a similar disaster, remember to keep all flammable objects out of direct sunlight where they may get too hot.

Fire Education Class

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to learn how to avoid a disaster occurring in your home is to be educated about the issues that can be prevented.  Getting that knowledge at an early age is even more valuable, so it becomes normal at a young age.

That is why SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton sponsored a local class for young kids to learn about disaster prevention and management.  The children learned about fire safety in the summer class.  They learned how to make an evacuation plan for the family in the event of a fire, or any other situation where they would need to leave the house.  In the photo, the class is learning about the fire trucks and how they work to put out fires.  Each child even got to spray the hose!

Wind Damage Restoration

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

Wind damage may loosen shingles, which can cause another roof leak in the future. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce mold inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Storm Shutters

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes it's hard to tell what preventative measures are necessary to protect your home from a natural disaster. However, high winds and hurricane damage in the past few years have cost Americans several billions, and unprotected windows can result in expensive damages like broken windows and eventual mold.

• Accordion: Simple and straightforward to use, these manually folding shutters are available in strong materials like metal or polycarbonate.  These are the ones in the photo.

• Bahama: This stylish variety not only provides protection from heavy rain and high winds, but also from the sun.

• Colonial: Protect your dream home with traditional blinds that frame your windows and add value to your property.

• Rolling: Prepare for a storm with ease with shutters that unroll or hide away at the press of a button.

All of these different options are permanent home fixtures that come in a range of materials, colors and designs. They’ll protect your home from flying objects, heavy rains and strong winds, so you won’t have to worry about damage to your windows or your home interior.

Home Depot has some options if this is something that you would like to look into.

Water Damage Response Time

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

When a water issue strikes your home or business, response time is the most important factor when containing the damage.  SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton is extremely fast, but steps that you can take on your own before our professionals arrive can make a huge difference.

Within Minutes:

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

Flood At A Car Dealership

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last month, the combination of a burst pipe and excess rainwater caused a local car dealership to flood.

SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton was called in to remediate the damage.  What was unique about this instance is that the water affected both carpeted and laminate flooring.  This presented a challenge because we needed to use multiple types of drying and dehumidifying tactics to successfully fix the issue.  We also had to do the job while not disturbing or damaging the automobile inventory.

As you can see in the photo, we were able to completely dry out the affected area.  The carpet in the office areas were left dry and odor free.

Treat Mold Quickly

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

This is a job that we recently dealt with.  The customer had a water damage that was treated by another company.  The water was not completely dried out.  This led to mold growing in the ceiling when the leftover moisture warmed and provided an ideal habitat for the mold to spread.  Unfortunately, because the issue was not properly mitigated by the initial company, SERVPRO needed to demolish part of the ceiling and walls to effectively treat the situation.  Now the mold is gone, new ceiling and drywall has been installed, and the customer is back in their home.

If you have a water damage at your home, or you suspect that you have mold growing, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton at (203) 324-1642.  Time is of the essence, and they will make it like it never even happened.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Their impacts can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane. Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 6-12, 2018) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane.

During Hurricane Preparedness Week, make sure you have a hurricane evacuation plan. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

If a hurricane strikes, you’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy recovery period that could follow. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.

This Hurricane Preparedness Week, call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance checkup to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know where you will ride out the storm and get your supplies now. You don’t want to be standing in long lines when a Hurricane Watch is issued. Those supplies that you need will probably be sold out by the time you reach the front of the line. Being prepared, before a hurricane threatens, makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between your being a hurricane victim and a hurricane survivor.

Document Recovery with SERVPRO of Greenwich

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton, we have the ability to save or recover your most important documents after a loss.  Whether it be a fire loss, water loss or flooding, or smoke damage, we have the capabilities to clean and dry those documents to have your commercial or residential property back to its original state as soon as possible.

We will begin by taking inventory of your documents at your home or office before we package them to transport for drying.

Once the documents arrive at our facility, they will go through a decontamination process to remove any bacteria left behind, depending on what type of loss has occurred.

We will then go through each box, page by page, to wipe down and remove dirt, soot, or other contaminants.  We have 3 levels of cleaning based on the type of soiling, and how heavy it is.

Many times documents that have been affected will hold residual smells of contaminants, or mildew, and should be deodorized before being returned to your client.

With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button. If your file room was damaged by water, or smoke, and needed to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice to eliminate the need to have 100’s or even 1000’s of documents and records in storage.

During the aftermath of your loss,  often times facilities will find that they have documents they no longer need and would simply like to have them disposed of properly.  SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton is able to help with this process as well.

Water Leak in a Commercial Building

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Recently, we were called to remediate a large-scale water damage in a multi-use commercial building.  Multiple businesses were affected when a sink malfunctioned, and water pooled on the second floor, seeped into the drywall, and flowed down to the first floor.

Our crew responded quickly, using cutting-edge equipment to extract thousands of gallons of water.  Once the excess water was removed, we observed that the carpets and the lower drywall was the most in need of drying.  Our skilled crew set fans to dry the affected area in a timely and efficient manner.  The photo shows our fans in action as they evaporate the moisture in one of the affected carpeted areas.

The customers involved were taken care of, and were all happy with the outcome after our crews finished the job.

SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton is always ready to help those in need, so if you suffer a damage like this, please do not hesitate to call.

Mold In Your Washing Machine

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

We are soon entering warmer weather, which puts us at higher risk for mold and mold-related issues.  One place that we often overlook for mold is in our washing machine.  The high moisture content in both the machine and atmosphere contribute to an environment conducive to mold growth and its accompanying mildew smell.

Here is how to ensure your washer and the surrounding area stays free of harmful mold:

You will need the following materials:

• White vinegar

• A natural all-purpose mold killing solution

• A cleaning rag (or sponge)

Begin with the exterior of the machine.  Use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution to wipe down the exterior of the machine. This will remove the more visible grime, such as dust and oily fingerprints. (Both organic sources provide floating mold spores with a tantalizing invitation to congregate and colonize.)

Next, clean around the lid and seal. For front-load washers, the rubber door seal will need extra care in order to ensure the removal of mold and mildew. Gently pull back on the rubber stripping and use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution. Even if no mildew or scum is visible, Step 2 is necessary in the prevention of mold growth.

We are an IICRC Certified Firm

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies.

IICRC Certified Firms must

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops the Standards for The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Prevent Legionnaire’s Disease in Commercial Settings

From the CDC:

Water System Maintenance

The key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to   prevent Legionella colonization (growth) in water systems.  Guidelines for reducing the risk of Legionella growth and spread are available for those who maintain and manage building water systems, including systems for potable (water for drinking and showering), non-potable, and recreational water from ASHRAE®. ASHRAE is a not-for-profit organization that develops standards and guidelines for industries that design, manufacture, and maintain building systems.

Dangers of Asbestos in a Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Although asbestos is for the most part no longer used in construction and manufacturing, many buildings today still retain traces or even large quantities of asbestos. Particularly in older buildings, testing for and identifying this asbestos is an important job, but one that is unfortunately neglected by many business owners. Failing to test for asbestos when making renovations or restorations to a building can cause long-term negative health effects for restoration professionals, customers, and even yourself, creating a legal and financial disaster large enough to ruin most businesses. There are specific Federal regulations mandated by the EPA regarding renovating buildings, and asbestos abatement. SERVPRO provides certified asbestos testing to ensure the safety of our technicians and your customers alike.

Asbestos testing for a business is not only advisable for practical reasons, but also for legal ones. Failing to test for asbestos can lead to steep fines and regulatory penalties, regardless of whether or not the substance is present. OSHA has explicit guidelines in place regarding demolition or renovations of commercial structures, especially schools, and other municipal buildings. Furthermore, if a customer or employee gets sick as a result of untested asbestos, you may be at risk of a costly and difficult lawsuit. Federal and state authorities alike take this process seriously, which is why it is always recommended to hire a certified company like SERVPRO to complete the task.

Health Reasons
In addition to laws on the subject, testing for asbestos should be a major consideration for your health. Asbestos can cause many negative health effects, some of which can shorten your lifespan or lead to long-term illness. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. The longer you are exposed to it, the more likely many of these side effects are to manifest, meaning that valued employees and regular customers may also be at risk. Just as the removal of mold growth can help to avoid a medical emergency in your business, so too can asbestos testing prevent a host of serious medical issues.

Your local SERVPRO is certified in asbestos testing and guarantees a fast and efficient process for your business. Call us today for our services or a quote.

Be Smart About Garage Storage

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

With spring coming in the coming months, most of us try to accomplish new goals, get a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning and organizing is the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for excess items.  We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.

Paint - Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage.  Recycle paint or donate it.

Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them.  Donate these items because they can’t withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.

Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals.  For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.

Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects.  Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.

Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard.  Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.

Mold After A Disaster

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Picture this: Your home or business is affected by a storm, whether the roof suffered a structural issue, or you had flooding from excess water coming in.  You fix the hole in the roof and dry the water yourself, and life continues as normal.  A couple months down the road, you find mold where the storm had previously had damaged your building.

Make sure this doesn’t happen.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has some great info about how to prevent mold after a storm hits your home or business.

After natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, excess moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings. When returning to a home that has been flooded, be aware that mold may be present and may be a health risk for your family.

Clean up and dry out the building quickly (within 24 to 48 hours - SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton can help with this). Open doors and windows. Use fans to dry out the building. Position fans to blow air out doors or windows.

Remove all porous items that have been wet for more than 48 hours and that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. These items can remain a source of mold growth and should be removed from the home. Porous, noncleanable items include carpeting and carpet padding, upholstery, wallpaper, drywall, floor and ceiling tiles, insulation material, some clothing, leather, paper, wood, and food. Removal and cleaning are important because even dead mold may cause allergic reactions in some people.

To prevent mold growth, clean wet items and surfaces with detergent and water.

Protect Your Investment by Inspecting Your Crawlspace

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Over time crawlspaces need maintenance.

Crawl Spaces in Fairfield County

Many homes in southwest Connecticut are built on crawlspaces.  Snow load, water runoff, and rising water tables need to be dealt with to maintain your property.

If maintained properly, crawlspaces have advantages over other types of construction.

• It gets the house above the ground, an important point in damp areas.

• It is less expensive than a basement, and comparable to the price of a slab foundation.

• Duct work, plumbing, and electrical can run in the crawl space, which makes them easier to service, and move if necessary.

Items to inspect for are:

• Standing water on top of vapor barrier.

• Condensation or leaks on water pipes or ductwork.

• Muddy soil.

• Staining on walls from water or efflorescence.

• Sagging or missing insulation.

• Plumbing leaks.

• Musty/moldy or foul odors.

• Deteriorated vapor barrier.

If mold is found anywhere in your crawlspace, call SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Strange (but common) Places to Find Mold

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in many places.

When we think of mold problems we equate it to damp basements and black gross mold growing on drywall; but mold is insidious and can grow in places where you least expect it. Mold is fast growing, can pop up within 24 hours of being exposed to moisture, and spreads quickly.

Here are some common places where mold forms that you might not be aware of:

• Under Your Refrigerator

The spaces behind and under your fridge rarely see the light of day, which make them a perfect breeding ground for mold. Clean all water lines and drip pans and ensure they are not leaking; even a small leak can lead to a huge mold problem. Take the extra time to check and clean behind and underneath your refrigerator.

• Chimneys

Your chimney can easily become a breeding ground for mold. Brick crevices collect water, dirt, and other organic debris. Rusted chimney caps and faulty flashing let in rain and snow, encouraging mold to grow. Replace rusted caps and fix flashing. Call a licensed mold removal specialist to remove the mold in your chimneys. To prevent mold, get your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep at least once a year.

• Front-Loading Washing Machines

Front-loading washing machines are great, but can be a hotspot for mold growth. The gasket around the door on front-loading washing machines often stays wet because the door is usually closed when not in use. Add some lint to the moisture and mold happily munches and multiplies. Wipe the gasket and glass dry before you shut the door. If you spot mold, run a hot water wash with some chlorine bleach (no clothes), which will kill the fungi. Even if you have a top-load washer make sure to regularly check behind and underneath your washer and dryer to make sure there are no leaks or source of moisture. Clean out vents and lint traps to prevent mold havens, as well as fire hazards.

• Window Sashes and Seals

Condensation from windows provides the moisture mold loves, and the dirt and dust that collect provide the perfect place for the mold to settle. After heavy rains open windows and wipe moisture from the bottoms of sashes and windowsills. Replace any broken seals and if you notice any water has leaked into the wood and walls call a professional to see if the problem has caused mold.

• Air Conditioners

Air conditioning units trap dust and pollen (a good meal for mold) and grab moisture from the air. If you don’t run your AC unit at least every 24 hours in warm weather humidity in your house climbs, giving mold the opportunity to grow in AC ducts, drain pans, and on coils. Drip pans and drainage hoses on window units can leak causing mold to grow into the windowsill and dry wall. If mold grows in your central air conditioning unit you’ll have to hire a mold remediation pro to clean out the system.

If you suspect you may have mold contact the experts at SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton.

What is Ice Damming?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater in a manner, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof.

Ice dams are a common sight in the Northeast. We've handled several claims this past month stemming from ice damming. What we've found is the flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice build up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll tell you how to prevent these dangerous ice dams.

Ice Dam Prevention

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

PREVENTING ICE DAMS

You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake from below or a broom or plastic shovel from above. BE CAREFUL: The first method can bury you in snow, while the second can send you slipping off the roof. Hire someone who knows how to use a safety line.

You can replace your shingle roof with standing seam or other metal roof. Or you can replace the bottom three feet or so of your shingle roof with a wide metal drip edge. Whatever you do, install a water-repellent membrane under any new roofing.

NOTE: If your roof is not very steep, an ice dam can still form on metal roofing and drip edges.

DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS

1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.

2. Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.

3. Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.

A good trough-maker is a tube of cloth (a leg from an old pair of panty hose works well). Fill it with calcium chloride, tie off the top, and lay it vertically across the ice dam. It will slowly melt its way down through the dam, clearing a path for the underlying water to flow free.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?

When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

That's where we come into play. We can't prevent the ice damming from happening, but we can help you take care of the damages that it can cause.

Frozen Pipe Water Damage In Norwalk Wilton

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures have fluctuated between cold and bone-chillingly cold.  When it gets very cold, homes and businesses are at higher risk of pipes freezing and ultimately bursting.

Here are a few tips to remember:

• Check around your home or business for areas where water supply lines are in unheated areas. Wrap exposed pipes with foam, insulated materials or pipe heating cables. Watch these locations on a daily basis when temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

• If you are going out of town, and you suspect that temperatures will drop, turn off the water to your home and open all the taps to drain the water system. Set your temperature no lower than 55° F.

• Unhook the water hoses from the exterior of the home and bring them inside, to maintain their life.

• Drip your faucets, to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes during an arctic blast weather advisory.

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much costlier repair job if pipes freeze and burst

• Open cabinet doors when temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm air can circulate around the pipes and prevent the water from freezing.

Popular Locations of Frozen Pipes:

• Outside wall

• Under a sink

• Unheated crawlspace or basement

• Outside water spigot

• Swimming pool supply lines

• Water sprinkler lines

• Attics

• Garages

Tips on Thawing Frozen Pipes:

• If a pipe bursts before it is thawed, immediately shut off the water at the water main to prevent further damage!

• Frozen but not ruptured? If you turn on the faucet and the water doesn’t come out or comes out in a trickle, your pipes are probably frozen. You need to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it bursts.

• Identify the frozen water supply pipe.

• Open a faucet supplied by the frozen line, even if you have not found the frozen spot.

• To find the blockage, follow the pipe back from the faucet to where it runs through cold areas such as an exterior wall, unheated crawl space or in some cases an unheated basement if the pipe is near an outside wall.

• Often the frozen area of the pipe will be frosted or have ice on it. If the situation is getting critical the pipe may be slightly bulged or look slightly fissured.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall:

• Leave the main water valve near your water meter open when thawing the pipe.

• If the frozen pipe is behind a wall or ceiling, you’ve got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

• Turn up the heat in the house and wait.

• Use an infrared lamp or lamps to heat the wall where you think the frozen area is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because the heat passes through the air without heating it, directing more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

• Tear out part of the wall or ceiling to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe.

If Your Pipes Burst…

• Turn off the water supply. Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water shut-off valve. You should find this in the basement or where the service pipe enters your home. Drain the system by turning on all your cold-water valves.

What You Can Do to Manage the Damage (until we get there):

• Water Buckets. If you notice the leak quickly you can catch dripping water in buckets.

• Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out.

• Turn off electronics/appliances

• Open Drawers, closets and cabinet doors to in enhance drying.

Fire Investigation Assistance

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

After a large fire loss many questions need to be answered such as:

• What was the source of the fire?

• Were there any fire accelerants present?

• Was there negligence or arson activity?

• Was it a mechanical/structural issue or human error?

Local fire departments, private insurance companies, gas and power company representatives and many others are called upon to investigate the scene of the fire and do their best to answer these and many other questions. This process can take from a few days to several weeks.

SERVPRO will set up a containment fence around the perimeter of the property and install any needed wind and/or erosion control barriers. We will bring on site portable restrooms and any heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers that are requested by the investigation team.  We provide the investigators with a mobile office, generators for power, lights and computers, hard hats, gloves, respirators, eye protection, water, coffee and miscellaneous office supplies.

Providing the fire investigation team with all the resources necessary to accurately and quickly determine the cause of the fire, helps streamline the entire insurance claims process, ensuring the reconstruction is started sooner for the property owners, so they can get back to living “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton is here to help with all fire damage and remediation issues.

Avoiding a Dryer Fire

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:

1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.

2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.

3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.

Storm Safety Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lightning from thunderstorms injures hundreds of people in the U.S. every year and kills dozens. These causalities are easily preventable if you follow these simple safety tips.

1) Listen to the radio and television for severe thunderstorm warnings. The National Weather Service issues warnings for counties and even sends out text messages now to our mobile phones when storms are on their way. Pay attention and heed their warnings for safety.

2) Remember the 30 second rule. If there is not 30 seconds in between the time you see lightning and hear thunder, it’s time to go indoors.

3) Lightning typically strikes the tallest object around so if there is a storm, move indoors if at all possible or into a hard top car if there are no buildings around.

4) Once inside, stay away from windows, plumbing and electrical. If lightning strikes outside, it can carry inside via land lines.

5) Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. If you can hear thunder than you are close enough to get struck by lightning.

6) If you are caught outside, avoid standing by tall isolated objects such as trees. Find a grouping of small trees surrounded by taller ones, avoid bodies of water, and if there is only open spaces, look for a dry low-lying area and try to make yourself the smallest target possible. Do not lay flat on the ground, rather crouch with your head between your knees. Sheds, outhouses and tents provide no safety so keep this in mind when you are hiking or camping. Always think ahead and be prepared in the event that you are caught in a thunderstorm and if possible, turn around on your trip and head home.

Power Outage Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

When a heavy storm hits your area, your power may go out.  Most of us have experienced it before.  It can range from a minor inconvenience that lasts less than an hour, to a multi-day event that requires safety precautions be taken.

If your refrigerator loses power, food and other perishables are safe to consume if the outage lasts 4 hours or less.  After this period, bacteria can grow and cause food to be unsafe to eat. Medications that need to be refrigerated can lose their potency if warmed too much.  Most medications are still effective up to 24 hours after a power loss.  Still check each label to verify. After that period, discard all medications unless otherwise noted.

If an outage occurs in either the winter or summer, extreme temperatures can come into play.  Both heat stroke and hypothermia can affect people if the building without power has no means of temperature regulation.  If too hot, seek out a commercial space that has a generator powering an air conditioning system.

Cleaning Mold from Tiles & Grout

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Removing mold from tiles and grout can be a lengthy process, but SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton does our best to get it taken care of in the proper steps.

First, begin by scrubbing the mold off the tiles and grout. You should use a scrubbing brush along with a household cleaning product or mold killing product. There are also commercial tile or grout cleaners you can buy.

After this you'll probably find there is still mold stains left on the grout. You can use bleach to fade these stains away. Before you use the bleach you should spot test it to make sure that it won't discolor your tiles. You should also wear gloves to protect your hands from the bleach.

Apply the bleach to the grout and leave it sit for about 10 minutes. Instead of chlorine bleach you can use hydrogen peroxide if you like. Another alternative is to use baking soda. Mix it with water to create a paste and then use a toothbrush to scrub it onto the grout.

If you find the stain remains on the grout after bleaching then repeat the process. Give it some time and this should fade away the mold stains on the grout.

Fresh Year, Fresh Look with Dry Ice Blasting

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning process using solid CO2 pellets (known as dry ice). It is
primarily used for industrial use in a variety of applications. The pellets sublimate (convert directly from a solid blast pellet to a vapor (CO2) leaving no residue. The process is superior to sand blasting, glass bead blasting and other types of cleaning methods for numerous reasons.

SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton demonstrate the effectiveness of dry ice blasting on a heavily traveled sidewalk in downtown Stamford, CT.  This is a great service that SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton provides to many of our commercial clients.

2-story water damage in Stamford

7/21/2017 (Permalink)

Bubbled paint from pooled water.

A pipe break caused this house to flood on he second floor. The water flowed down the walls into the first floor, damaging the walls and carpeted floor in the process.  This before picture shows the first floor ceiling with gallons of water bubbling the paint.

SERVPRO of Westport was called in to clean up the aftermath. We pulled up the damaged carpet to reveal a gorgeous hardwood floor.  We cleaned the wood floor and delighted the homeowner.  The owner was thrilled-she said "This floor never looked this good in the 10 years I've owned this house".

Be Prepared For A Hurricane

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

The threat of a potential hurricane is always nerve wracking to all in the affected area. However, being prepared and knowledgeable of precautionary measures to take in the event of a hurricane can ease some the stress and panic you may be experiencing.

Having a ready to go emergency kit is key in any disaster situation. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the contents of this kit should include:

  • Map(s) of your local area
  • Tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers or pliers to maneuver utilities
  • Matches
  • Sanitation products such as baby wipes, trash bags and disinfectant
  • Dust masks in the case of air contamination
  • Plastic sheeting and Duct Tape for creating shelter-in-place.
  • A battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio
  • Multiple flash lights
  • Surplus of batteries (for radio/flashlight)
  • A First aid kit
  • At least 3 days worth of non perishable food (per person) and can opener if needed
  • At least 3 days worth of water (1 gallon per person, per day)

This basic list is, of course, to be adjusted and will differ person to person depending on specific needs such as any medications, pet needs, money, gasoline etc. But this list provided is a staple for a basic emergency kit.

To be aware of what is happening around you before the storm hits, be sure to frequently check the news to gather updated information on the storm. Familiarize yourself with which is the safest room in your home, evacuation routes, and locations of shelters.

During the storm the measures to take are quite simple. If no emergency evacuation is issued, stay in the safest room of your home, away from all windows and have all necessary emergency supplies on hand. Listen to a battery powered radio for updates and be sure the storm is officially over before leaving shelter. Hurricanes are known to subside for a brief amount of time if the eye of the storm passes over you, but then resumes again in full force.

After you are sure the storm is over you may go outside and observe any serious damage. If there are any signs of danger such as downed power lines and fallen trees, report them immediately and steer clear of any threat.

If at any point during the storm your home experienced extreme damages (water, structural) SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton is a 24/7 emergency cleanup and restoration company that can service all of your needs. With quick responses we will have someone on their way to meet you in no time and offer our help to the best of our ability. You can reach us at 203-324-1642 or request for help online through our website. Stay safe this storm season!!

Summer is right around the corner! You may know all the facts about summer fun, but are you up to speed on summer’s severe weather? Connecticut summers are notorious for a variety of severe weather, but two of its biggest threats are extreme heat and lightning. Consider these striking facts:

Striking Fact #1: Heat is the #1 weather-related killer in the U.S.Tornadoes and hurricanes often get the headlines, but excessive heat is a formidable foe that claims more lives each year than floods, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. SERVPRO Expands PGA Sponsorship with PGA Fantasy Golf

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

There is an old adage: “It never rains on a golf course.” As the official cleanup and restoration company of the PGA TOUR, SERVPRO® knows this isn’t true, but rain or shine, fans follow their favorite players’ performance at PGA golf tournaments throughout the season. Recognizing the ever-growing popularity of the game, SERVPRO has expanded its relationship with the PGA TOUR by becoming the presenting sponsor of the PGA Fantasy Golf games, available at pgatour.com/fantasy.

“We know people don’t associate SERVPRO with the wide-open spaces and fair weather feeling of a golf course. After all, SERVPRO is the company you turn to when the unexpected, even the unthinkable, happens to your home or business,” says Michael Keating, owner of SERVPRO® of Norwalk Wilton. “But each SERVPRO business is also a local business, there to support the community in good times and bad. Teaming up with the PGA TOUR as the sponsor of their Fantasy Golf Suite helps us build connections within our local community. We want local home and business owners to know that we are there for them ready to respond at a moment’s notice if things go wrong.”

The new “One & Done” games were launched on January 3, 2017*, but the game structure allows players to join in on the fun at any point during the current season. Each week, game players select one player to earn points for them in that week’s tournament. The PGA Tour Fantasy game is based on accumulated FedEx Cup points and the PGA Tour Champions game is based on accumulated Charles Schwab Cup points. A player may select a given golfer for a tournament in each of the One & Done games only once in each season. Since some tournaments earn a pro golfer more points than others, game strategy is based on selecting the right golfers for the right tournaments.

“With the first major tournament of the season—The Masters—just around the corner, now is a great time to start your One & Done game for this year’s tour,” says Keating. “If you ‘master’ the trick of choosing the right golfers in the right tournaments, you could jump to the top of your Fantasy league.” The top finisher in the PGA TOUR game will win a new set of golf clubs, while the top prize for the PGA TOUR Champions game is a trip for two to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, November 6-12.

SERVPRO of Norwalk Wilton specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Causes of Mold in Your Home

3/10/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is a vital piece of nature, assisting with the disintegration of natural matter and the recycling of supplements in biological systems. While outdoor mold is fundamental, mold developing inside present’s health risks and can bring about property damage. Molds recreate by method of minor airborne spores that travel essentially anyplace, even in our homes.

Despite the fact that there are hints of mold spores indoors, they require the right "ingredients" to produce mold. Unfortunately, the conditions for mold development are found in many homes: a nourishment source, (for example, drywall, rugs, and wood), warmth, lack of light, enough time to develop, and above all, dampness. Since dampness is a fundamental factor in mold development, here are the most common culprits that cause heightened dampness in homes:

- Flooding can cause a measurable amount of water into your home, bringing on serious water damage and conceivably cause mold development inside 24-48 hours. Calling an expert restoration professional such as SERVPRO promptly is your best defense with regards to mitigating water damage and preventing mold development.

- Increased humidity can happen in homes from multiple sources — muggy climate, persistent rain, cooking, showering, and so on. To help prevent development of mold growth in your home, ensure your home is all around ventilated and keep the humidity below 55 percent.

- Deficient ventilation leads to increased humidity, and due to this, mold development and different issues like indoor contamination. Try to open entryways as well as windows when viable and to utilize fans as needed.

- Leaking pipes are a typical issue in homes and should be settled promptly. In many cases, leaks are hidden from view, such as inside walls or above the ceiling, so make a point to investigate wall and ceiling stains routinely.

- Roof leaks are additionally a way for water to saturate your home and cause mold. In the event that you see water stains on the ceiling, check for water damage in the attic and have your roof assessed and repaired at the earliest opportunity.

- Condensation happens when warm dampness loaded air interacts with chilly surfaces. Condensation can be seen on walls, windows, solid floors or metal pipes. Reduce condensation by adjusting the humidity in your home.

- Basements give astounding conditions for mold development because of poor ventilation, cooler temperatures (that advance condensation), and incessant water leaks and flooding.

Aftermath of a Home Fire

3/10/2017 (Permalink)

Recovering from a fire is not easy by any means. It is an emotionally draining process that turns your life upset down. The hardest part comes at the beginning, when you feel helpless and are completely unsure as to how to proceed. With that in mind, our goal is to present to you the fundamental steps you need to take immediately after the fire is extinguished.

Deal With Insurance

You should already be on the phone with your insurance agent before the firefighters even get done putting out the fire. Mind you, this is just the beginning. After a few days, you’ll need to get a copy of the official “fire report” from your local fire department. The insurance agency will likely send an adjuster out to survey the damage and help you get in touch with a restoration agency, such as the professionals at SERVPRO.

If you are renting, then you’ll obviously need to contact the owner of the home. If you own home but don’t have insurance, on the other hand, then you’ll want to speak with the Internal Revenue Service. You might be eligible for something known as casualty loss.

Settle in Somewhere:

Most likely, your home is currently in an unlivable state, meaning you’re going to have to find somewhere else to stay. Your best bet is to stay with friends or family. However, if that’s not an option, check with your insurance company to see if your policy covers temporary living expenses. Otherwise, contact the American Red Cross.

Before you leave, try to rummage through your home for some essential items like the following: Identification Cards, Medications, Eye Glasses / Hearing Aids, Wallets, Credit Cards / Checkbooks, Money. **Only do this AFTER you get permission from the firefighters to reenter your home.**

Turn Off Utilities.

Make certain you get all of your primary utilities turned off.  Why waste money for services when you are not even living in your home? Plus, restoration cannot be performed on your home if there’s still electricity and such running through it. The risks of electrocution would be far too high.

Contact a Restoration Company.

This is perhaps the most important step. You’ll need to contact a professional, full-service restoration company, such as SERVPRO. Our company is trained specifically to deal with post-tragedy damage. Below is a list of some of the things you can expect us to do:

  • The company will start by removing all the water from your home. During a fire, a lot of water from the firefighters hoses usually collects all over the place. Plus, fires sometimes cause pipes to burst, thus leading to even more severe flooding. The point is that restoration cannot begin until the water is first removed.

  • The company will then start with water restoration. Carpets, walls, ducts must be dried. Mold must be removed. Just this step itself can take a few days.

Next is the actual fire restoration. First and foremost, the company will inspect the structural foundation of your home and fix any major problems. Obviously, if a ceiling is about to crash, then it must be attended to before any other restoration efforts can be completed.

Once the structural foundation is secure, the specialists will start cleaning up soot/smoke damage, deodorizing everything (carpets, walls, furniture, etc.) and basically returning the home back to normal. If anything is so damaged that it cannot be repaired, it’ll be removed and thrown away. It’s your responsibility to let your insurance company know what items you lost.

Last, but not least, the company will clean up the remaining mess (dust, debris, etc.) and rearrange everything back into place.

Move Back In.

Finally, you get to move back into your home and resume life. Unfortunately, it can take quite a bit of time before you even get to this final step. We’re talking about several weeks. The truth is that restoring a home from a fire takes a lot of time, a lot of resources and a lot of money.

Just remember to keep in close contact with your insurance company through the whole process. If all goes well, you’ll get your home back in one piece, and you’ll get your lost possessions replaced.

When you have fire, water and mold restoration service needs, give the experienced professionals at SERVPRO a call.

Saving Personal Items from Water Damage

3/10/2017 (Permalink)

One of the most common topics after a client suffers water damage, is how and what they can save from water damage.  Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question. Every water damage is unique in some sense, so what can be saved is really on a case by case basis. However, here are some guidelines that you can use to make the best decision possible.

What Type of Water Damage?

Determining whether the water that damaged your personal belongings is clean or contaminated will be a big factor in whether or not it can be salvaged. Obviously, if you are dealing with clean water, the chances of you being able to save some of your belongings is higher.  Even though it may be possible to restore something that is damaged by contaminated water, it is more than likely not worth the health risk that it may bring.

Porous vs Non Porous Materials?

Porous materials such as fabrics, wood, and paper are very good at retaining water. This also means it increases the chance of other dangers like mold growth, and damage beyond repair. This is not always the case and if handled quickly and properly, many times these items can be saved as well. On the other hand, porous materials like marble, metal, and porcelain - among others - usually have no problem being restored. Since there is really nothing for bacteria and mold to root itself in, a simple cleaning is usually no problem.

The Amount of Time the Water Saturated?

Another factor that will come into the equation of determining what can and cannot be saved is how long the materials have been wet for. The longer an item sits in water, the deeper it can penetrate. As you can imagine, this makes it increasingly more difficult to bring it back to its normal state. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a bit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Factor in the Replacement Cost.

Water damage restoration of personal belongings is no different than any other type of repair. You will always want to evaluate how much it is going to cost to repair something versus simply replacing it. Is the item you want to save really worth paying a professional to do work on it? Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You should also take into account that paying for restoration does not guarantee your item will be returned to its original state. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the item anyways.

If you are unsure about whether or not one of your items could be salvaged, it is best that you get it analyzed by a professional. If you hire a water damage restoration company to handle a dry out of your property, they will be able to assist you in assessing damage to your personal belongings as well. To speak to a professional water restoration representative at SERVPRO, contact them today.  They are always there to help.

Water Cleanup Tricks

3/10/2017 (Permalink)

A broken pipe is by far one of the greatest nightmares homeowners face. Even just a small broken kitchen pipe can quickly cause a considerable quantity of damage to your home. It is for this reason that you need to take care of water damage immediately.

Dealing with water damage requires seeking the help of a trained professional water restoration expert, such as the experts of SERVPRO. Before they get there, there are a few things you can do to assist in keeping the damages to a minimum.

Here are a few tips:

- Turn Off the Water

You might be tempted to seek out the source of the leak as your first step. This can be problematic, however, depending on the type of leak or damage. If, for instance is simply an overflowed sink, then you would just turn off the sink. However, what if a pipe that you can’t see has burst?

It’s because of reasons like these that you need to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you temporarily turn off electrical power as well. The last thing you want is for the water to mix with electrical wires!

- Accelerate the Drying Process

The next step entails doing everything in your power to get your home to dry. Start by opening windows and turning on fans. This will get air flowing through your home, which will help to start drying it and also reduce the buildup of disgusting odors.

If you have a dehumidifier, turn it on immediately. It will extract moisture from the air, thus helping accelerate the drying process. Run it for as long as possible. If you stop early, it could lead to the growing of mold and mildew.

If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then don’t worry, because the water restoration experts will bring one with them. As we said earlier, however, just make sure you contact them right away. They need to get to your home as soon as possible!

Make sure you also remove rugs and other portable carpeting and place them outside to dry. Try to wipe down furniture and personal items (books, chairs, toys) as much as possible.

- Pull Out a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Another step that we recommend taking is pulling out a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. We understand that you might not have one. If you do, use it to remove as much water as possible from carpets, upholstered furniture and/or tile and wood floors.

This process can take quite a while, but it’s important to remove as much water as possible. Also, make sure you focus more on wood surfaces than carpeted areas. Due to wood’s porous nature, it’s apt to soak up all the water, which in turn will cause it to become warped and delaminated.

Again, if you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, don’t worry. The restoration professionals will take care of this for you. Just make sure you contact them immediately!

Things Not To Do

There are some things you should definitely NOT do after your home suffers from water damage:

- Never leave web fabrics and clothing items in place. Try to hang them.

- Also avoid leaving books, magazines and other such items on wet floors.

- Please refrain from trying to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean up water.

- Avoid using electrical equipment and appliances a like television.

- Stay out of rooms that have a wet ceiling.

These might seem obvious, but it’s good to know. Be especially careful with wet ceilings. They could be much weaker than you think, and the last thing we want is for a roof to collapse on you!

Final Steps

The real work won’t start until the restoration company gets there. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, possess the equipment needed to do real water extraction and repair. Part of this process will involve installing certain equipment, be it professional-grade dehumidifiers and "what-not."

When this occurs, make sure you follow the directions given to you. Usually, the professionals will ask you to keep their equipment running for a while. Make sure you stick to their schedule and do not arbitrarily turn off their equipment. This could negatively affect the drying process and make things worse.

The last thing the professionals will do is give you preventative maintenance tips. It is recommended that you follow through on these steps to insure that your home and belongings return to their former state. It can make the difference between whether or not your home ever suffers unneeded water damage again!

For all of your water, fire and mold restoration needs, give the professionals at SERVPRO a call today!

Stay Healthy During The Winter

2/8/2017 (Permalink)

Although this season is marked by jolly and wonder, there are some aspects that can burden some, either temporarily or over time. Here are some winter health tips that will keep you happy and healthy so that you can truly enjoy the holiday season in all of its glory.

  • Healthy Eating

After Thanksgiving’s kickstart, it is a common temptation to fall into the habit of eating a surplus of sugary, fattening comfort food. However the over indulging might make you start to feel like a part of the Clause family.

To stay on track with healthy eating, push aside those unhealthy comfort foods and make a substitution for something nutritious and tasty. A craving among most is food that is warm and savory due to the bitter cold outside. Most would be quick to grab a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, but those may not be the healthiest choice. Soups or stews can satisfy that urge for warmth and flavor while benefitting you with a healthy variety of vegetables and protein. Sweet potatoes offer both savory and sweet food packed with good fats and are very filling. Pairing these foods with dark leafy greens and fresh fruit will create a perfect balance to keep you healthy this winter.

  • Exercise

Although winter deems it perfect weather for hibernation, staying indoors and sleeping beneath blankets all day won’t benefit our health. Get yourself motivated with some upbeat music and get into the swing of a revised workout routine. It obviously can be much more challenging if you are used to doing all of your workouts outside but if you happen to have a gym membership or an open space inside your home, you can quickly develop a newfound workout plan to keep conditioned over the next few chilly months.

Make sure to stretch and warm up before your workout. Since the temperature is so low, it takes more time for your joints and muscles to become ready for exercise. Also of great importance when exercising is to stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you can to keep your body a well oiled machine.

  • Keeping The Flu At Bay

During the winter, germs are flying left and right from those who already fell vulnerable to the common cold. From airborne germs from coughs and sneezes to hand to hand contact, there are many easy ways for you to catch these bugs too. To keep from getting ill it is very important to boost your immune system. Be sure to get proper vitamin intake either from supplements or healthy fruits and veggies. Vitamin C is especially helpful during the cold and flu season because it helps strengthen the immune system to fight of viruses and bacteria.

Stress can also be a major contributor of susceptibility to illness. Make sure you limit the stress of your day to day life through different tactics such as deep breathing or even meditation. Be sure to get proper hours of sleep as well to keep your immune system healthy and stress levels low.

On top of these factors it is also very important to keep the surfaces in your home clean and to always wash your hands after going to the bathroom or touching something that may be in contact with multiple people, such as a door handle or stair railing. This will further limit your chances of becoming sick with the common cold or something worse.

What is a Puffback?

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Among the unfortunate occurrences of mishaps such as frozen pipes, air leaks and ice dams during the winter months, there is also the haywire messes caused by puff backs. A puff back is the result of an oil burner’s hinderance of ignition allowing fumes to accumulate and causes an eruption of debris to travel through a furnace’s exhaust system and into your home. This incident can cause soot to damage multiple areas of your home, especially if you have a heating installation that would allow it to travel by the means of air vents. The emission of soot signifies a problem rooted within the heating system. Although, this does not indicate that there is a need to replace the system entirely.

If a puff back has transpired, you may experience large areas of discoloration on walls, cabinets, curtains, bedding, windows and other areas, as well as an evident, strong and smoke like odor. Unfortunately the soot produced is not an easy mess to eradicate because it will withhold oil from the furnace making it diverse from soot’s common powdery form.

Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance.  Don’t attempt to clean up the puffback residue without contacting us here at SERVPRO of Stamford first.  We will assess the damage and necessary restoration process. This should be done immediately to ensure the removal of the residue and chemicals is safe and efficient for both you and our staff.  A repair company should also be contacted to locate and correct the problem with your furnace.

In terms of preventing puff backs it may be helpful to inspect your furnace every so often to eliminate the buildup of debris and/or contact your heating company if you begin to experience any sign of soot in proximity to your furnace.

If you experience a puffback, call SERVPRO of Stamford 24/7.
